Also I got a quote from King Lear in the Beano which I think might be a first.

I am not a religious person and I am swiftly tiring of having to care so much, and know so much, about the Bizarro World version of Christianity that the MAGA cult practices.

Just fucking read the Bible. Once! Without using some megachurch scammer's For Dummies notes!

Awkward efforts to stovepipe the US under Trump into comparisons with 20th century Europe or the Middle East are less analytically helpful than with recent crises in Western Hemisphere societies like Mexico or Colombia that are culturally and institutionally much closer to 21st century America.

This is really good on Sánchez's immigration and Africa policies. An object lesson for other progressive parties in govt: when you are in govt you do what you believe is right and if the opposition howls, well, let it, it's the opposition

Them: Hi, we are a prestigious global foundation! Please come and speak at our event in Lyon, France.

Me: Sounds great! I am self-employed, please cover my travel, accommodation & a small honorarium for my time.

Them: Alas, we can't even cover travel and hotel.

PEOPLE, PLEASE STOP DOING THIS.

A cunning plan. If he got a couple of questions a week he'd have to turn up and do some work instead of swanning off to America.

Cock-ups happen.

Less often, because they take more effort, conspiracies happen.

The thing is to tell them apart, and to also know when you are not in a position to decide.

Today is the centenary of the birth of the great Tony Hart who opened the eyes of generations to visual art and who is forever associated with this, the shimmering Gallery theme from Vision On – which was also pretty much everyone’s introduction to the vibraphone. youtu.be/-ZNkJXKV7_w

At what point of the US not having a government do the Belgians start to make fun of them?

An example of the government not having a project: only yesterday the government was trumpeting new measures to make it easier to build things. We'll work out who actually builds stuff later on.

Ironic, in a sense, that the UK is so bad at languages that it no longer has the language skills to describe *in their own language* what they want the language skills of migrants to be

Investors are betting big bucks on the idea that AI will create an explosion of leisure time...e.g. it was a key part of the public rationale for the massive $55bn takeover of video games maker Electronic Arts. But are they right?? (short thread linked to my column today www.ft.com/content/4011...)

Spot on @stephenkb.bsky.social on why Brexit has fatally wounded the Conservative Party.
To succeed in Tory politics now, you have to pretend not to know stuff. The successful mid-career people who used to form the Tory base are not prepared to do that.

How Brexit drained the Tories’ talent pool
The party can’t keep expecting successful people to pretend that leaving the EU was a good idea

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Nothing, but nothing, shouts "lazy PR takes advantage of lazy journalist" like demanding something be taught in schools.

Bonus lazy-points to this example for ignoring the fact that it's already in the KS1 national curriculum.
