My goal isn't gentrification, it's exploration of commonalities in contemporaneous music. Prog soul doesn't erase the existence of other categorizations, it just gives us a new lens to appreciate this art. I don't want to replace existing conversations, I want to add a new dimension & perspective.

@polyphonic.nebula.tv You make mention of Curtis Mayfield and Isaac Hayes pushing “boundaries” but their musical and artistic choices were never outside of the soul tradition. There has ALWAYS been complexity in soul music as a natural extension from rich gospel and jazz arrangements.

@polyphonic.nebula.tv What you seem to be proposing is a gentrification of a historical understanding of soul music. A reframing of a folk art by outsiders of the of the community which produced and classified the art originally, in order to fit the outsiders flawed understanding of the art itself.

@polyphonic.nebula.tv At the end of your intro, you say it’s really exciting for you because it means that “all of us” get to be an active part of a conversation that’s redefining how we understand music history and then you show a video of a sea of exclusively white faces.

@polyphonic.nebula.tv I love that you are giving these artist their flowers for being innovators in popular music and you are one of my favorite creators and a central reason for my lifetime Nebula membership but I feel you are committing the sin of not being aware of your own lens.
