Twinkies aren’t unhealthy because they have GMOs in them. They’re unhealthy because they’re Twinkies! GMO crops are safe, and gene-edited crops can help make more food with less land. There’s no need to freak out about them.

Well- deserved! I remember Joe’s talks at the Carnegie when I was just starting graduate school. His talks were energetic and well-explained and exciting. AND he always made other scientists feel welcome. He is one of a kind

Scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone. That is how you create a robust and creative scientific enterprise.

University admin & faculty- read this and consider what your core beliefs are- are they: free expression, rewarding merit, and inclusion?

MIT President Sally Kornbluth just issued a statement to the campus community saying NO to Trump’s authoritarian compact

“And fundamentally, the premise of the document is inconsistent with our core belief that scientific funding should be based on scientific merit alone.”

MIT President Kornbluth announced on Friday the university “cannot support” Trump’s compact, saying the university disagreed with a number of the principles laid out in the document, including policies that would limit freedom of expression and institutional independence.

Oh! What a great story and beautiful photos. I felt the same way the first time I saw ghost flowers in a Maine wetland. “I was moved by the existence of such a mysterious living thing”

A view between two buildings to a white building with a pole on top, capped by a red sphere. Under the pole is the word 'joystick' on red paint, above a red window. Below on the wall is a painted horseshoe, with faces within the horseshoe. The buildings are all metal clad and the doors are red. A bicycle is propped against the left hand building.

Blue-throated Goldentail from this morning at @tapirvalley.bsky.social #CostaRica

I haven't seen these for a few months, so it was nice to spend time with this one. They're much more shy than the Snowcaps and I have to be stealthy when approaching them.

A lifer #butterfly for me today at @tapirvalley.bsky.social, the Zavaleta Glasswing (Godyris zavaleta). These are found mostly in Ecuador and Peru, and this was fun to see in #CostaRica

Colleagues have pointed out that the Dartmouth response is strategically ambiguous. If I were faculty or alumni, I would provide feedback that: 1) you interpret this to mean that the unviersity is refusing to sign a corrupt contract; and 2) you are proud of the university for taking that stance.

Dartmouth’s response to the Trump admin’s corrupt contract, short and sweet: “You have often heard me say that higher education is not perfect and that we can do better. At the same time, we will never compromise our academic freedom and our ability to govern ourselves.”
