waar wil je aan uitgeven en op bezuinigen;

wil je aggregaat uitgaven verhogen;

Views for @asia.nikkei.com: Still, even if another trade war ceasefire is reached in South Korea, the latest round of exchanges has deepened mistrust and is 'likely to accelerate the bifurcation of supply chains.'

I’m not betting TACO is this time. The rare earths thing has potential to seriously disrupt global trading relations

Like, a 15 year deal with CATL that gives it a long term return but also sees European security concerns assuaged

We should admit we got beat, learn from Beijing, and adjust accordingly…

Remember all the China doves who thought it was fine to rely on Beijing for all our clean energy needs. Like just a few months ago you had like a good chunk not just of left wing politics but even the center right wanting to do the “green transition” entirely with Chinese-made supply of PV, LFPs etc
paulb72.bsky.social
And the only reason the far right didn’t join them was that they don’t believe in clean tech. Otherwise they’d have been just as into it, maybe even more so. Never rely other governments with different interests & history for your most fundamental consumption needs…

Something strange about how history and qualitative methodologies are so deeply embedded in the work of the last few economics Nobel picks, while the field itself does not appear to reward these interests in younger scholars.

This doesnt sound like “we’ve got this REE export license deal with China thing under control”
paulb72.bsky.social
But for China to back down from this would be self destruction reputationally. Nobody could take anything they’d say seriously anymore. Which is why this entire situation seems like a huge freight train heading straight at global markets

According to Dutch newspaper NRC, Nexperia itself raised the alarm about the ‘mismanagement’ by Wingtech’s Zhang Xuezheng. NRC sources speak of the risk of Chinese persons being appointed to strategic positions. Events supposedly not related to the recent US and Chinese export control measures.

[…] Een andere optie: […] belangenverstrengeling”

Obviously I think most people immediately made the link with REE export controls. But I dont think that - based on the evidence and even the most hawkish interpretation of the facts - that you can make that connection
paulb72.bsky.social
The FD piece is pretty illuminating. Govt took the ‘security’ line but only after a few executives went to some kind of chamber or smth, and went ‘hmm these transactions look kind of fishy’. And knowing how reluctant The Hague is to intervene in markets more generally, seems there were real issues..

What’s been strange is that NL first took the ‘national security’ line but are trying to shift toward ‘mismanagement and corruption’ now
paulb72.bsky.social
Pretty significant turnaround from NL, which was reluctant to impose export restrictions even on ASML’s EUV machines. While we wait for Beijing’s reaction, this could mark the start of a broader tit-for-tat between Europe and China…

I mean, it could be both. But still
