I'd say more Ernst Röhm, head of the Sturmabteilung (SA, aka “Brownshirts”).
69 here. It's both culture and times. Not you. I have the sentiment you share often enough.
Think "Night of The Long Knives" (June 30 - July 2, 1934), when the SA (Sturmabteilung, aka "Brownshirts") was purged.

Wow!
More than 100 former top Justice Dept officials, including dozens of former prosecutors, file court brief opposing James Comey's prosecution:

"not the judgment of an impartial prosecutor, but rather an expression of retributive animus by the President"

And of course Didion's "Miami" (1987): "In many ways the Bay of Pigs continued to offer Miami an ideal narrative, one in which the men of the 2506 were forever the valiant and betrayed and the United States was forever the seducer and betrayer and the blood of los martires remained forever fresh,''
Alma Guillermoprieto, "Looking for History: Dispatches from Latin America"(2002): From Vargas Llosa to Che, to Vicente Fox, Subcommander Marco and, again, Eva Peron.
V.S. Naipaul, "The Return of Eva Peron, with the Killings in Trinidad" (1980). The intersections of grandiose delusion, economic decline, and breakdown/authoritarianism, in Argentina and Uruguay
Can you say "Hitlerjugend"? Sure you can. Use your words.

Thank you ProPublica! The mainstream media has failed us, making your work especially important!
...awaiting law enforcement that has not, is not, and will not enforce.
Agreed, and he is definitely part of the Deep Bench of up-and-coming Dem talent.
I think about the Roman Empire at least once a week. At least. And I am an Obama/Biden/Harris Democrat.
Bad move. Today, the sad fact is private wealth -- e.g. Goldman, Pritzger -- is a requisite for the kind of political power that can contend with MAGA threats and slime. Goldman is perfectly competent, even good.
SCOOP: DSA-backed City Council Member @cmalexaaviles.bsky.social is exploring a primary challenge to Rep. Dan Goldman in NY-10.

Avilés is meeting with @socialists.nyc's Electoral Working Group next week to discuss her potential congressional run.

Well, yes -- they are MAGA's Brownshirts. In Weimar Germany, the Sturmabteilung (SA, aka Brownshirts) rose from amateur street thugs in 1919 to a 2 million strong paramilitary army by early 1933, when Hitler assumed the Chancellorship.
No one can be surprised. Exposure of any local LEO chatboard would reveal exactly the same stuff.
Could a theatre production of Aristophanes' "Frogs" (first produced 405 BC) -- about the role of art in civic life -- be a fit for Portland right now? Asking for a friend...
What The Hell Is Going On, a thread:

I’ve seen some thinkpieces and posts about Portland protests that fail to understand the long-term hyperspecificity of Portland culture/humor, and frame it as a sort of shitposting meme-pilled ironic thing. Which is wrong.

So I’m gonna give you my breakdown.

Trump put a hit on Epstein.

His prison cell was never dusted for prints or examined for DNA evidence after his death.

Is there anybody on the planet who thinks this was an oversight?

Rep Raskin has been great. Rep Ocasio-Cortez has been great. And Rep Frost and Rep Crockett. Senator Murphy. Maybe no one knew exactly what to do. But such people laid down a clear marker. Let’s respect these and other elected federal representatives who stood out these first few weeks.
