A one of a kind vintage 1950s handmade copper enamel modernist Winged Creature brooch by Hank & Diny Frugte of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Entirely handmade hand wrought copper enamel wearable art brooch! With one end up, the design is a stylized butterfly, but the other end up it looks more like some fantastical creature. Can be worn either way. Entirely handmade hand-cut from thick copper sheet, then hammered from the back, and incised in sections at front, and then a gorgeous transparent orange enamel is fired overtop. The transparent enamel makes it possible to see all the hand work done to the metal prior to the enameling. At very top is a black enamel outline of the fantastical winged creature/butterfly. At back the brooch is counter enameled in a speckled dark blue enamel. Hank Frugte (d. 1990) and his wife Diny (1929-2024) were originally from the Netherlands, but emigrated to Canada just after WWII and settled in Edmonton, Alberta. They were already trained enamelists and artists who brought their talents and experience with them to Edmonton, and created amazing artworks throughout their careers! They also shared their knowledge and experience with other artists by teaching workshops and other educational endeavors in both Canada and the US. The brooch measures 2-3/8" tall by 2-1/8" widest point. Marked at back of the brooch as shown, "Hank / Diny Frugte Edmonton". Excellent vintage condition.

$Beginning in 1900, young painters and sculptors of all nationalities migrated to the Paris neighborhood of Montparnasse, the city’s hub of avant-garde activity. Despite their different approaches and interests, the artists of the so-called School of Paris fostered an inspiring climate of imaginative cross-fertilization that helped to sustain the idea of Paris as the center of artistic activity until the beginning of World War II. Jacques Lipchitz moved to Paris in 1909, and through his friendships with Diego Rivera, Pablo Picasso, and others, he participated in the Cubist movement. His bas-reliefs and sculptures in the round communicate the geometric and fractured forms and the favored subject matter (musicians and seated bathers, for example) of contemporary Cubist paintings.$

One of the greatest Nias statues (siraha salawa) extant, representing an important chiefly ancestor. This statue has a well-documented history in
Europe, as it once belonged to the cosmetics magnate Helena Rubinstein. She was dubbed "the empress of beauty" by Jean Cocteau, as much for her outstanding collection of art as for her business acumen. This statue was the subject of a famous 1926 photograph taken by the famed Dadaist and conceptual artist Man Ray. "The Moon Rises over the Island of Nias" appeared on the cover
of an inaugural exhibition at the Galerie Surréaliste entitled Tableaux de Man Ray et objects des îles. On that occasion, Man Ray's photographs were displayed alongside more than sixty sculptures from Indonesia and the Pacific Islands that had been loaned from the
legendary collection of André Breton.

a SUBLIME vintage 1930s 40s African tribal hand carved wood and copper studs stylized African Woman elongated head sculpture from the Mangbetu people of the DRC. An early and quite strikingly beautiful African tribal art sculpture depicting the body/head modification practices of the Mangbetu people of the Congo. No doubt artworks like this are what inspired Italian artist Amadeo Modigliani to create his depictions of elongated faces in his iconic portraits! Entirely hand carved from solid wood, and with applied handmade copper 'necklace', 'earrings', and studs at top of the head as shown in the photos. As you can see the entire sculpture is elongated from a natural shape, and this is no doubt a depiction of a young African woman whose tribe practices body modification, specifically the head region. African body and head modification includes practices like artificial cranial deformation, such as the elongated heads of the Mangbetu people of north-east Democratic Republic of the Congo. Babies' heads were bound with cloth to create the desired shape. As adults, the effect was emphasised by wrapping the hair around a woven basket frame so that the head appeared even more elongated. This sculpture is unmarked, and I am guessing of African origin, likely the Mangbetu people of the Congo. Measures 12-5/8" high by 7-1/4" wide by 4-1/4" deep at base. Weighs over 2.6 pounds prior to packing. In any case, a lovely vintage Art Deco era sculpture with a tribal theme! Excellent vintage condition overall with some slight spots of wear to the finish and tarnish to the metal parts but no damage or detractors whatsoever.

The fierce face of the North Wind - Boreas
This remarkable Roman bronze from the 1st century CE captures the power and wild spirit of Boreas, the purple-winged god of the north wind and bringer of winter. In Greek mythology, Boreas was one of the Anemoi, the four directional wind gods who ruled over the changing skies and seasons.
From his icy home in the northern mountains of Thrace (Thrake), Boreas swept down with roaring gusts and snow-filled tempests, chilling the air with his breath. His arrival marked the deep freeze of winter, a reminder of nature's untamed and divine forces.
Yet beyond Boreas's frozen domain lay Hyperborea — a mythical land of eternal spring and radiant sunlight, untouched by his cold winds. The ancient Greeks imagined it as a paradise "beyond the north wind," a place where humans lived in harmony with the gods, forever bathed in warmth and light.
This bronze head, with its windswept hair and intense expression, evokes both the strength and the majesty of Boreas — a being both feared and revered. It reminds us how deeply the ancients connected the elements of nature with divine presence, giving faces and stories to the forces that shaped their world.

A dazzling vintage 1940s 50s handmade sterling silver and amethyst Royal Queen Elizabeth Coat of Arms design brooch created no doubt by Margot Van Voorhies for Los Castillo in Taxco. An elaborate and romantic design based no doubt on the arms of the Royal Princess Elizabeth just prior to her becoming the queen (see my last photo), probably around the time of her marriage in 1947 which of course was a worldwide celebration coming so shortly after the end of WWII. Entirely handmade hand-repoussage design in solid sterling silver, and centering two emerald-cut faceted prong-set natural amethyst of super rich intense color and very well-matched. This brooch was made pre-Eagle stamp, so 1948 at the latest, and may have been a special commission for a favored customer. I haven't seen it before, and there is no doubt that it is a very rare design. Measures 3.25" tall by 2-1/8" wide, and weighs 26 grams total. The stones each measure 15mm by 12mm, and are each in the range of 5-6 carats of lovely high-quality faceted richly colored natural amethyst. The best quality amethyst that I have seen in any Los Castillo piece, and probably anything from Taxco that I have seen as well! Amethyst is a naturally pleochroic stone, meaning that it can show more than one color especially in richly colored and faceted examples. These stones flash blue, violet, red, and purple, depending on the angle and intensity of the light source! Gorgeous! Unfortunately, this phenomenon is not visible in regular still photography, but I guarantee that the new owner will be pleasently surprised with the beauty of the stones. Marked at back as shown, "Los Castillo Taxco" in a circle, and "Sterling Made in Mexico" in another circle beside design number "537". An incredibly beautiful brooch, and very rare! Excellent vintage condition.

A super rare vintage late 1940s early 1950s handmade sterling silver pre Columbian Aztec Mayan Figure design pin/pendant brooch created by Ana Nunez de Brilanti for her shops Victoria and Cony in Taxco. A magnificent example of the highly-detailed hand work created by the Victoria Taller in the 1940s and 1950s in Taxco! A three-dimensional 'face' atop a detailed 'head dress', and with two dangling 'earrings' that each have three dangling bead-tipped wire dangles of their own that all move with the movement of the wearer! Such a beauty, and the only example of this design that I have run across ever! Can be worn on a chain as shown (chain not included), or as a pin/brooch as well. Could also be worn on a neckring, or a black velvet cord would be incredible! Measures 2-3/8" tall by 1-5/8" wide by over 3/8" thickest point, and weighs a substantial 21 grams total. Fully marked at back as shown, "Victoria Mexico Taxco Sterling Cony 576" and Eagle 12. Excellent vintage condition.

A huge vintage 1940s handmade sterling silver Mexican Art Deco Leaping Gazelle brooch designed by Margot van Voorhies Carr for Los Castillo in Taxco Mexico. At the time, Margot was married to Antonio Castillo, one of the four Los Castillo brothers that founded Los Castillo in the late 1930s in Taxco. Margot drew for many sources for her designs, particularly the Art Deco 'animalier' style in this case! A very large and particularly attractive brooch that makes a stunning statement when worn! Entirely handmade by the talented silversmiths at Los Castillo in Taxco in the 1940s, and one of Margot's iconic designs from that period! Measures 3.25" across by 2.5" tall, and weighs 18.1 grams total. Marked at back as shown, "Los Castillo Taxco" In a circle, "Made in Mexico Sterling" in a circle, the Eagle 15, and design number "579". Excellent vintage condition.

Two vintage 1960s handmade multicolor (light green, clear, blue) banded lucite Op Art modernist cocktail rings. These are originals from the 1960s, and have been in my personal collection for over 40 years. These Op Art lucite rings were hand cut from laminated multicolor lucite block, then shaped and polished. They have acquired a patina with age as you can see, and were no doubt much loved and worn by the original owner. The predominantly blue ring measures 1-1/8" by 7/8" at top, rises 5/8" above the finger, and is a size 5.75 US. The half and half green/blue ring measures 1-1/4" across by 5/8" wide, size 9 US, and rises just over 1/2" above the finger. Unmarked. I believe that the original owner wore this pair together on adjacent fingers for a stunning look! Of course, they can be worn individually or even on opposite hands if you prefer. They also make great Op Art pendants strung on a chain or cord! They are both in excellent vintage condition.

They also make great Op Art pendants strung on a chain or cord! They are both in excellent vintage condition.
