Went on a little pilgrimage today to Parton, the resting place of 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿Scotland’s very own Einstein, James Clerk Maxwell. Quite the pause when I realised he was only one year older than me (48) when he died. ⚛️🔭

Around 75% of UK citizens would fail A-Level English, by my estimate.
It's quite a ridiculous, draconian requirement.

It will exclude most Doctors and Nurses coming to work in the NHS, just one 'for instance', because medical and scientific skills do not automatically confer linguistic skills.

Yes. And the really troubling thing about beauty BS is that it's another weapon in the armoury for those arguing for endless demolition and replacement. Who cares if an existing building isn't in the style you happen to cling to sentimentally? It's tens of thousands of tonnes of CO2 to replace it.

Speculative digital reconstruction of Tor Alvie hillfort near Aviemore, Scottish Highlands. The site was identified as a hillfort in 2010-11 (Historic Environment Record: MHG55341). The reconstruction model was created in Blender 3D using a combination of high-resolution digital terrain data obtained from Ordnance Survey, which I used to create my backdrop of the Cairngorm Mountains. Although the fort has never been excavated, the line of its rampart walls can broadly be determined by a stony bank that encloses an area of roughly 85m x 30m, bearing immediate similarities in size and shape to Craig Phadrig hillfort near Inverness. However, unlike Craig Phadrig, there is no evidence that Torr Alvie was vitrified. It is difficult to know how thick the ramparts were, whether there were timber palisades, and how many entrances the fort had, so imagination plays a large part in this visualisation. A speculative digital reconstruction of the early sixteenth-century chancel screen of St Mary's parish church in Youghal, Ireland. Using survey measurements, I developed a computer model to help me work out a possible design for the screen and its loft. Its form is guided by the information written in historical documents and from a single piece of decorated timber, which may have been part of this original screen, found underneath the church floor during recent archaeological investigations. I have combined influences from some surviving medieval screens found in churches in several English counties. The depiction of the Last Judgement painted above the chancel arch is imaginary, and also influenced by similar mural paintings found in several medieval English churches. The Last Judgement, sometimes also referred to as a ‘Doom’, was a common feature of medieval churches. It was an instrument for highlighting the contrasts between the rewards of heaven and the agony of hell, intended to guide Christians away from sin and misbehaviour.

Great. Now 'individual' grants are under attack, alongside staff doing too much research. Meanwhile research finances are described with no reference at all to student finances. And our VCs are all at fault for encouraging us to apply for grants that don't pay 100% FEC.

A fine example of an Early English Gothic style miniature cathedral, All Souls, Invergowrie, is our #ScottishChurchOfTheWeek. It was completed in 1896 for Frances, Lady Kinnaird in memory of her late husband George, the 9th Lord Kinnaird and their three children, who had all predeceased her.

When I wander round Greyfriars Kirk. I always stop and marvel at some the carvings on the various graves. There is whole story the mason is telling with this one.
