To be fair, over the past 70 years the US have actually installed and sided with quite a few autocratic strongmen around the world, just not so openly.

You just gave the general definition of late-stage, not free market, capitalism. Capitalism needed the free-market/democracy to emerge, but the resulting uber-capitalists do not see any use of either.
Liberal democracy is incompatible with their interests. Their mistake is to think dictatorship is.
