In case any recent arrivals are wondering what happened to my long-standing Twitter avatar, here’s why I changed it.
The avatar I’ve always used online in the last - it’s the villager from Animal Crossing with an EU flag photoshopped expertly onto his shirt

There is a failure here in the education system (not to mention a parenting failure). Not to downplay their personal responsibility for what they wrote and said but many teens are selfish idiots. (I know I was.) Many of them will learn empathy the hard way as they grow up.

I can’t imagine this surprises anyone. You’d better believe you’d find similar content in Young Conservative group chats.

For some reason I had laboured under the misapprehension that Moseley disappeared from politics after the 1930s. But he was still at it in the 60s. I did not realise that there was a direct unbroken line of continuity from him to Farage via the National Front. Anyway, Bertie shows us how it’s done.
In December 1961, the British fascist, Oswald Mosley, sent Bertrand Russell two of his books. Mosley wrote of ‘the two root differences between us' in international politics, and subsequently invited Russell to lunch. On 22 January 1962, Russell declined the invitation in these terms.

Dear Sir Oswald,

Thank you for your letter and for your enclosures. I have given some thought to our recent correspondence. It is always difficult to decide on how to respond to people whose ethos is so alien and, in fact, repellent to one's own. It is not that I take exception to the general points made by you but that every ounce of my energy has been devoted to an active opposition to cruel bigotry, compulsive violence, and the sadistic persecution which has characterised the philosophy and practice of fascism.

I feel obliged to say that the emotional universes we inhabit are so distinct, and in deepest ways opposed, that nothing fruitful or sincere could ever emerge from association between us.

I should like you to understand the intensity of this conviction on my part. It is not out of any attempt to be rude that I say this but because of all that I value in human experience and human achievement.

Yours sincerely,
Bertrand Russell

My understanding is that once it’s done the first time then subsequently it’s very fast, just showing a passport, no stamping. But I guess we’ll soon see.

Also, one has to make the distinction between actual border officials and carrier staff who ask to see your passport to make sure you’re entitled to travel. For the latter, the passport doesn’t matter; for the former, it does.

The UK doesn’t always do exit checks, so if you’re not asked to show a passport on leaving, then there’s no issue. It’s a pretty foolproof approach to only ever show the passport to the guard of the same jurisdiction. I once accidentally showed my UK passport to a French guard and she saw I had >

This doesn't end here. For the rest of their lives, the IDF command and Netanyahu and his Cabinet should be spending sleepless nights and looking over their shoulders worrying about the arrests (that will surely come) that will land them in The Hague for war crimes.

If you have a biometric passport, with your photo in it, (which is surely all valid passports now), then they have a digital copy of your photo and any other biometric data you submitted when you applied for it.

Could you come and do my wife’s car please?

Fingerprints are digitised and encoded in my German passport. And face too, also in UK passport.

EU border guard, EU passport. UK border guard, UK passport.

No EES rollout at Dover yet.

Biometric data in biometric passports.

You get two checks on every route I do. Tunnel, Eurostar, ferry. I cross the border twice a week. Never have any passport stamped.
ottocr.at
Ditto. This is my weekly commute.

As I mentioned, that data is already collected but manually by border guards using existing IT systems.
ottocr.at
No, the same, but the EU passport holder in that group might have to wait while the non-EU members have details taken the first time

I guess you meant risible

you’ve clearly never been through Zaventem airport

All the information being harvested in EES is already gathered by border officials and stored on government databases. The only difference is the method.
ottocr.at
No, you’re spreading baseless rumours. In the EU we have extremely strict rules on data privacy.
