Asked my students yesterday if they'd heard about the protests happening on Saturday. These folks are generally well-informed and interested in politics. Only 20% said they'd even heard of the No Kings protests. How did the organizers fail to get on the radar of these 18-22 year olds?

I don't want smart cities, I want dumb, beautiful and affordable ones.

Horrible people, horrible person. Same same.

I have a tiny audience so it’s understandable that I’m not getting any traction on this issue, but I will *not* click on pretty much any article with an image of a horrible people substituting for a lede.

I do not want to see them. I do not want to hear their voices. I still want to be informed.

Failing to be silent about the way a person lived their life is not the same as celebrating their death.

in all the discussion (and sometimes tokenizing) of Portland protests being a creative spectacle that neutralizes law enforcement, don’t overlook:

Members of the Unpresidented Brass Band were bull rushed & brutalized in the middle of playing "Ghostbusters." One was sent to the hospital and another tackled, arrested, and taken across state lines where she is still being detained.

Got off the bus to walk in the rain.
Wet purple flowers Cactus against a grey sky. A clutch of pink roses all wet from the rain shower. One yellow and red rose drooping from the water.

Through the window of the high school you can see the blue of a tarp and an empty court.

$300/875! Any support is greatly appreciated.

Losing hope that I'll be able to keep my home. Not sure I can raise the full $875 this month for rent. I'm scared of being on the streets again. Last time, I had to rely on an abusive man to protect me. Please help me not go back there. tamilove21 on Cash App, Venmo, and Paypal.

Fwiw my coastal Oregon friend who is an extreme Portland hater has said *nothing* to me about the city this week.

The US federal attack on Portland has resulted in the best advertisement for a city that I have ever seen. Round-the-clock joy, community solidarity and silliness that much of the West has lost and longs for.

The housing market (God, what an ugly phrase) is just musical chairs—with property owners renting to other property owners because it’s cheaper for them to rent other peoples’ homes than it is for them to live in their own investment properties.

As climate change increasingly becomes a threat not just to homes, but to the very foundations of retirement, even the most careful savers are finding personal effort can’t outpace the risks woven deeply into the financial system.
