Why does voter turn-out matter?

Because in all likelihood, when everything is said and done, Calgary’s next mayor will have received the vote of roughly 1 out of every ten eligible voters.

Again, if you stopped counting right now: 11 of the 15 people on #yyccc would be new versus the 2021-25 council. 2 incumbent councillors, and the incumbent mayor, look to be headed for defeat. First mayor to lose a re-election bid in Calgary since Rod Sykes lost to Ralph Klein.

Perhaps the most ridiculous part of today’s interminably long lineups at polling stations - & people staying home as a result - is that the UCP will inevitably try to spin the low voter turnout as a good thing, because “ineligible voters didn’t cast a ballot”. Like 7/10 of us were cheating before.

The idea that municipal political parties are a good thing because it makes it easy for voters to keep track of someone’s positions requires 2 assumptions:

1) Party candidates agree about everything.
2) Voters are stupid & lazy and don’t know how to use Google.
