also the way some people involved in this discourse still believe that top/bottom preference impacts personality also makes me hesitant to tag it. 1. i thought we left that in the manga from 2+ decades ago and 2. i don't want you to make assumptions about my charactization based on a top/bottom tag

I think I imagine the naturally-formed requiring more finesse to use, while the stuff they manufacture is more accessible? Like the natural deposits may be interesting for research purposes but not terribly useful as weaponry, as Shinra would prefer to make their juiced up synthetic versions?

I like to think about the naturally formed materia in the lifesprings and could imagine people who have more like traditional ecological knowledge knowing how to use it--but I would imagine that Shinra would be *quite* stingy of their manufactured materia and it would be hard af to get hold of.

I've also had fun with writing it being an especially like, resonant? experience for soldiers/mako enhanced folks. I feel like when you're literally infused with magic to a toxic extreme, I like to imagine a sensitivity or recognition to the feeling.

I enjoy seeing materia described as something that most people could use if they had access to it, but that some might be more adept at learning than others. I also enjoy the thought of elemental/type leanings.
