Six months ago I wrote this post about “the next terrorist attack.” I republish it now (lightly updated) because my fear of this scenario has recently grown much greater.

The world's 10 richest people (nearly all from the U.S.) are collectively $500 billion richer this year thanks to growth in stocks tied to AI.

Meanwhile, data centers are sucking up communities’ water and electricity.

AI is making the rich even richer while everyone else pays the price.

All the footage of ICE bullying, abductions, general taste for violence and thuggery, reminds me of a UK policeman in the firearms unit who once opined to me 'anyone who volunteers for gun duty is probably best kept well out of it'. Untrustable hot-heads, he meant. Gung-ho.

'In Danish schools an hour a week is dedicated to the “Klassens tid”, an empathy lesson for students aged 6 to 16 years.'

If we did the same here in the UK, maybe we could become one of 'the happiest countries in world' too.

At the end of Vermeer's birthday, a little street in Delft. I always wonder what those two children on the stoop were up to, back in 1658.

Medicare for All would save $450B a year.

Every dollar spent on food stamps generates $1.50-$1.80 in economic activity.

Each dollar going to low-wage workers adds $1.20 to the economy overall.

It’s not about what this country can or can’t afford.

It’s about priorities.

Johannes Vermeer, born OTD 1632: The Art of Painting. Almost the only 17th-c. Dutch painting with an original title, and what a painting it is! The model, so calmly poised by the window. The painter, replicating her on his canvas.
