Israel has been at war with Palestine for decades.
nickofnz.bsky.social
Israel must now allow unobstructed humanitarian access.

The international community — including New Zealand — must end its culpability and inaction.

All necessary international pressure must be brought to bear to ensure that this fragile first step leads to lasting peace.

The joyful scenes of those released and reunited with their loved ones must now be followed by a full cessation of hostilities in Gaza and a total lifting of Israel’s unlawful occupation and blockade.

But it will not undo the immense suffering the Palestinian people have endured during Israel's genocide and continue to endure now in their ruined home.

The release of 20 hostages from Gaza and almost 2,000 hostages from Israel ends their harrowing ordeal and brings long-awaited relief for their families.

What more can we do than weep for the dead, offer assistance, call for accountability and keep pushing for a lasting peace and the end of Israel’s brutal occupation of Palestine?

The ceasefire is a tentative first step.

It’s been two years of genocide, unprecedented destruction, children killed and maimed in their thousands. Families torn apart. Wounds that will take generations to heal.
nickofnz.bsky.social
Why don’t we celebrate the “peace deal”?

If you witnessed a brutal beating in the street, you wouldn’t cheer when it ended. You’d help the victim recover and seek justice.

Peace is more than the absence of war.

The Palestinian people need much more than a ceasefire.

It’s ironic that this happens the day after the Luxon Govt announced it will make the climate crisis worse by letting the dairy industry off the hook for its superheating methane emissions.
nickofnz.bsky.social
There’s a major global climate adaptation summit in Christchurch soon but the National Party won’t let the climate minister attend.

Maybe they’re embarrassed about their recent efforts to make climate change worse!

Luxon “goes full Trump” with climate-denying methane backdown - Greenpeace Aotearoa
The NZ Government will rewrite NZ's once bipartisan climate change law to weaken methane targets and exclude agriculture from the ETS.

When the NZ's coalition govt took office nearly two years ago, its #WarOnNature started.

In that time, they've made a bewildering number of changes leading to environmental harm.

Greenpeace Aotearoa head @russelnorman.bsky.social has undertaken the gargantuan task of tracking them all👇

Ouch!

"The government’s methane announcement is the policy equivalent of a steaming cowpat on cross-partisan climate consensus and international efforts to tackle the crisis."

Even butterflies are losing their colours as forests are replaced by monocultures.

Without protection for native habitats, the most vibrant species could vanish.

It is not too late. In forests allowed to recover, colour and life return.
As forests are cut down, butterflies are losing their colours
The insects’ brilliant hues evolved in lush ecosystems to help them survive. Now they are becoming more muted to adapt to degraded landscapes – and they are not the only things dulling down

Methane makes up 48% of NZ's climate pollution.

The Luxon Govt's Trumpian announcement that they’ll never penalise methane pollution, along with moves to INCREASE the dairy herd, is a huge slap in the face for our Pacific neighbours and many NZers already facing the impacts of the #ClimateCrisis.

The NZ dairy industry has bent the Luxon Government to its will and we’ll all pay the price👇
russelnorman.bsky.social
One of the symptoms of the 'resource curse' is that Govt becomes captured by one industry. In NZ that is dairy. Methane is the dominant GHG for NZ but it is now exempt from prices or regulations to cut it, which means all other sectors have to carry the weight of emissions reductions.

Remember the old rightwing argument that all we needed to do was put a price on climate emissions and let the market do its thing? Well the necessary step was for the Govt to put a price on emissions. The current far right NZ Govt just announced it will never put a price on emissions.
nickofnz.bsky.social
Mind blowing.

The Luxon Government has confirmed it will rewrite NZ’s once bipartisan climate change law to dilute methane reduction targets and PERMANENTLY exclude dairy from the Emissions Trading Scheme – a move Greenpeace says amounts to full-blown climate denial.
