연꽃은 ‘연’인데 목련은 나무에 피는 연꽃이다. 사람들이 연꽃을 먼저 알고 나중에 목련은 나무에 피는 연꽃이라 했겠지. lily는 백합인데 water lily는 수련이다. 백합을 먼저 인지하고 수련을 물 위에 피는 백합이라 했겠지.
