I'm going to start collecting threads on HK protest art in one place. Easier to walk down memory lane, even if they be filled with tears and teargas.

Having these in many places mean the images are harder to erase. And harder to forget.

What does journalism education look like when the profession exists to maintain regime stability rather than hold power accountable? China's latest national journalism forum reveals a system designed to ensure Party control flows seamlessly from classroom to newsroom. bit.ly/474nY4D
Molding the Message - China Media Project
A forum held at a leading university in Beijing over the weekend shows how China's leadership keeps tight control over journalism — from the classroom to the newsroom.

Maybe all those LegCo folks are just trying to run for this. It’s all make believe anyway.

I’ll try to find the HK pamphlets from 2019 on what to do when pets are affected by tear gas. Again, let’s not think too much about why that information had to be compiled in the first place.
niaocollective.bsky.social
Similarly, if you’re worried about your upholstery when it rains tear gas in your neighbourhood, worry no more, because you will probably have to throw it all out

- Use aqueous/ oil-based detergent to repeatedly scrub clean furniture and aircon filter
- It's hard to get rid of chemicals from upholstered furniture. If there's a need, dispose of contaminated furniture"

I forget we have some very very very specific advice from the HK 2019 protest pamphlets when it comes to tear gas. Under normal circumstances, no one should really need to ask what happens to the food if tear gas gets into your fridge, but then again, what normal circumstances

"...

- If there are no suitable respirators on hand, use wet towels to cover mouth and nose to prevent exposure
- Food that's been contaminated must be thrown out. If you open the fridge when tear gas has seeped into the home, all food in the fridge must be disposed of"

But hey, it’s all ok because Xi must have a cardiac age of someone 14 years younger 😬

The question of age limit is tricky for Lee because Xi is 72…

The White Terror is over in Taiwan, but the age of banned books, banned art, banned speech elsewhere is not. To be able to freely look back at a painful past as history and learn from it - wouldn't that be nice?

The horror in 返校 resonated, not so much the supernatural but the *human* horror of authoritarianism, and the price that needs to be paid to come out the other side...

The idea comes up again in the below from late 2020, when it was clear NSL has eroded academic freedom in HK. Schools are now a shade of bloody red, nothing but a theatre for "love your country, love your Party", a graveyard of free thought.

Here we have Xi - as a malevolent spirit haunting our education institutions - dismantling HKU with an axe. Instead of 返校, it says 党校 - School of the Party. When education becomes reeducation...something has gone terribly wrong.

The one below hints at the horrors at San Uk Ling Holding Centre, the notorious detention centre where the police allegedly assaulted protesters. There are rumours some met their deaths here.

Image that's based on a poster for the Taiwanese film 'Detention'. with a woman in a mask holding a candle in the middle, a woman in a mask splattered in blood, all in a dimly lit corridor with a ghostly aura. It's spooky, and Chinese text all over it which is also all spooky. The main gist from the image is that whoever made it thinks the HK government sucks.
niaocollective.bsky.social
返校 (Detention) is a 2017 horror game from the Taiwanese studio Red Candle Games, and a movie adaptation was released in September 2019. The timing, and the subject matter of the White Terror, meant Detention featured quite a bit in HK protest art.

A small thread.
notgodzilla.bsky.social
oh btw if you guys liked Silent Hill f may I suggest Detention. It's by the same studio that made Devotion. It takes place during White Terror in Taiwan and has some really great horror elements from Taiwanese mythology.

You sometimes get the feeling HKers are just ATMs for the UK...

Still, good thing we've deftly navigated history without accruing moral duties toward anyone but Hong Kongers! Right, Anakin?
niaocollective.bsky.social
It also means the welcome is conditional and can be taken away at any time. If the UK wants to kick HKers out, they can also just as easily and suddenly decide we are not productive or educated enough, and what then?
