Banana's toes when he came to visit me tonight. The Baird's Tapir belongs to the order Perissodactyla, or odd-toed ungulates, with horses and rhinos.

#TapirTuesday was also a #TapirTwofer as Bananas visited me after this female who seems to be lactating. She was very pregnant in February and the gossip in the neighborhood is that she has her calf.

Let's hope she brings her baby to visit!

A Baird's Tapir standing in a garden looking at the camera. It's night.
I really hope she brings a little watermelon to visit!
Tapir toes are just the best!
All the better for churning up the forest floor. 😍
What great cat entertainment.
I was wondering if you were getting any of the rain i saw on the national map.
What good news for the plants and animals.
Usually I see them from the kitchen window down in the garden so this was a special treat. My husband laughed when I said "Wait don't move. I think I hear something different. Let me peek around the corner."
Then me getting my cell phone out of my pocket. 😃
It didn't seem to be too bothered by me. I really liked how well it's feet and nails showed up against the fence boards.
Spectacular! What a way to start the day.
Walking towards my front door on Sunday I heard a "different" bird call so I stopped and looked towards the side of my house and saw what I think is a juvenile Cooper's hawk perched drying itself on my fence gate. A big rain squall had just passed and it looked very wet. #birds🪶
A very wet juvenile hawk perched on my fence gate with it's wings slightly stretched out staring right at me. It's yellow feet with black toenails are gripping the fence board. Hayward kiwi fruit vines are visible in the background.
I'm so very happy he's returned for a visit! Did he avail himself to goodies in your garden?
I bet it smells great in there with all those brugmansia blooms.
Oh ok. He really does have a distinctive face. Hopefully there will be a little watermelon that takes after him.
Just another bird enthusiast. 😂
Is it fairly young? Interesting face and ear markings.
I was just thinking this very thing after reading your original post. Such an encouraging personal sign from your dad.❤️
One of my school friends who now lives in Minnesota and has a summer place on the lake has them all over their forested property. She said they sound like monkeys so now the two of us refer to them as flying monkeys
😂
I wish that I could have been able to get a shot of the two that were on a Douglas fir on Sunday, unfortunately I had taken my phone out of my pocket because I was crawling around weeding.
I usually hear them before I see them when I'm outside. They definitely have an unmistakable call.
I had to back up as I was going into my kitchen so I wouldn't scare this Pileated woodpecker off the suet feeder this morning. They were absent for a good portion of the summer and just showed up again two weeks ago in the Douglas firs in my back garden. They are magnificent birds!
#birds 🪶
A female Pileated woodpecker perched on a suet feeder. This suet feeder has a long tail prop at the bottom which makes it easier for large woodpeckers to hold on to the feeder. Pileated woodpeckers are huge. This shows how big it is compared to two suet blocks.

I choose video over stills in the hopes i can capture this again.
The past month I've been chasing the sunrise at the same place because there are feeding birds at short distance.

Occasionally when cormorants or a large fish are underwater the anchovies all leap at the same time.

I've never caught video or stills.

Until today

Twice.

In the sunrise reflection.
