Charles Murray said that. Now, what I thought was so interesting about that was, to me, this is just such an incredible, incredible illustration of what right-wing money, what their networks can do.
Literally pluck him from obscurity, place an op-ed of his in the Wall Street Journal, which leads to the book deal, which they give him the funding for a think tank position, so he can write the book.
Then once it's out, all the publicity efforts the right has. I mean, we know how that works still to this day. The books the movement buys to make them appear to be selling better than they are, the promotion, helping each other promote these books on the right, the podcasts and magazines.
It is a big family, and they do write by each other when the books come out on the right. And I think, basically, this might be putting it strongly, but there's a real sense in which it is only because of right-wing money aimed specifically at creating a kind of counter-class of

creating a kind of counter-class of experts on the right that could be quoted in a both sides way, as expert on the right, expert on the left, in newspaper accounts or on television. It is only because of that money that someone like Charles Murray is even known.
He would not have made it on his own in academia. He might not have even made it as a writer without this extreme largesse and push and help and support from the right-wing philanthropic network of foundations and then think tanks and other programs. This is like the money does matter.
They created this entire platoon of people like Charles Murray, who we would not have known otherwise if all they had to go on was their own intelligence, writing, and the kind of rigor and persuasiveness of their work.
And then his ideas get instantiated in law by a putative democratic administration.
