Local Election 2025: ENM Meet The Candidates (PNCC) - Lucky dip questions
The Meet The Candidates event was held at the Palmerston North Leisure Centre by Environment Network Manawatū on 27/08/25. This event was for candidates standing for the Palmerston North city Council and Te Pūao Māori Ward. In this section, candidates drew questions to answer from a basket. There was also a system of "wild cards" to allow candidates to jump in on a question they really wanted to answer. Find a podcast of the full event at www.mpr.nz/show/elections TIMESTAMPS 01:55 How do you balance the needs and expectations of today's voters with those of generations to come? 03:18 How will you approach the challenge of incorporating long-term strategic thinking in an environment where elected representatives are often rewarded for shiny short-term objectives. 06:28 What are some things Council can do with its parking policies to increase patronage of public transport? 13:34 To what extent is recycling the answer to reducing waste? 15:54 Transportation is the biggest contributor to city emissions - what will you do to make cleaner modes of transport more attractive so emissions can be reduced? 18:00 The endless quest for growth is unsustainable, what do you think of the concept of degrowth? 19:36 Do you support the development of natural burial options in the Palmerston North area, and what will you do to ensure this happens? 21:40 What are your views on the use of 1080? 26:10 What would you do to improve the safety of cyclists and walkers in the city? 29:57 How can we improve the health and quality of our waterways? 31:34 What are your thoughts on how PNCC can transition from neoliberal, ecocidal growth narratives to a resilient, community-centric model? 35:00 What is the value of developing a community-focused city-wide climate action plan? 42:03 What is your stance on central government directives to focus on growth, including housing developments and expansions, when our systems are already at capacity? 45:39 What is council's role in helping to address the overwhelming prevalence of plastics in our landfill, public places, and lives? 47:43 What role can Environment Network Manawatū play in supporting council's objectives? 48:52 What is the value of water bodies in urban areas? 50:19 An observation has been made that there are more trees planted in wealthier areas of the city. Where do you see evidence of inequity within our city and what do you think could be done about it? 52:03 There is a lot of change on the horizon coming from central government, which impacts local government. How can council be prepared for these unknown changes? 54:21 What priority would you give to ensuring climate plan actions are resourced and implemented? 55:44 I would like to know when the cycle track to Ashhurst will be completed. I would like to cycle it without riding on the main road. 56:57 Do you support bolstering the range of responsible recycling and composting options in Palmerston North? If so, how would you progress this?
