Diagnosis: PPA (Proficiency-Perpetuated Apathy)

We told him in 1st grade he didn’t measure up.

2nd: Told him again
3rd: Again
4th: Again
5th: Again
6th: Again

And again. And again.

And then we bemoan his apathy, as if there’s nothing we can do.

Alas, our apathy. 😶

Maybe if we spent as much time supporting self-efficacy as we do recording proficiency, we’d more adequately address apathy.

Numbering kids doesn’t help kids.

Helping kids helps kids (grow).

We can help kids outgrow (proficiency-perpetuated) apathy through self-efficacy.

Learning’s a light.

Gave each of my kids a tea light as they walked in on day one this year.

I asked them to imagine it as their learning and to have it on their desk each day to cherish and nurture.

It also serves as a signal for readiness—on or off.

Light the way. 🙂

Doing #DailyDiscussion differently this year.

From “loss” to “fear” to “Monday,” we are daily diving into the themes and topics of life’s long lessons.

My daily opportunity to continue learning that kids are far wiser than we give them credit for.

Instead of standards-based, try growth-based.

It does not remove the standard from the work.

Indeed, we need the standard.

But it does move the focus to the learner, whose growth is the work.

Words set the mind.

Growth mindset.

For students AND teachers, growing forward.

Let’s scale our support (feedback forward) to our scale of expectation.

No feedback.

No forward.

No learning.

We can do better.

Learning.

Not grading.

Is the conversation.

We can do better.

“What specific feedback would you like from me?”

This is the final question from my pre-ob tomorrow.

A question I’ve never loved.

Here in year 30, I’ve decided to give my principal an extra credit opportunity.

See below.

Imposter Syndrome Test

“We’re all just making shit up as we go.”

Are you making shit up?

Then you ain’t the imposter.

You’re true blue.

And you’re a valued member of the team.

“Exceeds Standard.”

Seems one of those “good ideas” we have without really having any idea of why we’re really doing it.

At its “least worst,” it reveals the folly of age grouping.

At its “most worst,” it perpetuates subjective gatekeeping.

We can do better.
