Likely true, but this makes me feel like an alien: I’ve *never* related to contemporary novels the way I have to ones set just a generation before mine or further back.

ACTUALLY, I have a theory that most books enter a cultural "uncanny valley" 20-25 years after release, where the culture has shifted just enough they're not contemporary anymore, so new readers can't directly relate, and they stay in the valley for about 50 years until they're clearly historical

Muting "unhinged literary opinion" because the Internet's already told me 847,962 times anything written before 1990 is boring & worthless, all non-genre fiction is "English professors having affairs" & these are "girl" books & these are "boy" books which are also all "red flags" & thanks, I'm good.
