The problem is that we do win elections! Dems win about 50% of the time, which is as much as you can ask for, and it hasn't stopped the authoritarian slide.
meelar.bsky.social
Only if you assume that the extra 20 Dems are as good as the rest of the party. That's highly unlikely to be true! The 2009 majority was huge, but didn't do much besides healthcare (and almost no reforms to govt structure) because the marginal vote was a status quo worshipping blue dog.

...plus negative polarization against "activists" (which most Dem electeds have in spades)

The average person who doesn't follow this stuff closely (especially someone who came up in politics pre-2020s) can come off as quite pro-Israeli just from blindly following the lead of the minority of the caucus that is ideologically pro-Israel...

I hesitate to disagree with you on this stuff, but don't underestimate the degree to which many just don't think or care about it that much. There's a real risk of doing the xkcd geologist thing. xkcd.com/2501/

A massive storm that brought a record storm surge to Alaska was poorly forecast, and “this is one of the clearest possible examples to date where missing upper air soundings due to NWS constraints may have led to a degraded forecast.”

Sunday a massive storm surge event from the remnants of Typhoon Halong caused catastrophic damage in remote western Alaska. Thanks to @alaskawx.bsky.social for his help with this deep dive, including the forecast challenges in an area dealing with reduced NWS upper air soundings

Historic coastal flooding strikes western Alaska
Remnants of Typhoon Halong produce hurricane force winds and push massive storm surge inland in Kuskokwim River Delta, destroying and carrying away homes, leaving devastated communities.

A lot of comments on Mars rovers or Moon landings, but it's important to remember that the planet NASA studies most is Earth. This is less about cutting flashy things like moonwalks and more about keeping communities in the dark on climate, weather, agriculture, pollution, natural hazards, and more.

Basically my entire politics. I am interested in your liberalism if it's liberalism that takes liberalism seriously but I can't consider it to be such a thing if there is some racial exemptions made simply for the benefit of your preferred group in MENA. This is what liberalism in the US does.

I do not oppose liberalism as a camp per se I oppose their exceptionalization vis a vis Israel

You can buy Pritzker for 3 cents on Kalshi right now, which is wild to me. Someone's going to make money.
Kalshi odds for the 2028 Dem nomination. Newsom at 35%, AOC 10%, everyone else in single digits.

The actual answer is that there needs to be a non-fascist right of center party that will either win about half the time, or draw enough votes to deny the Fascists any victories. And nobody involved in this conversation will ever vote for this party.

“Win every election” is not a viable strategy for preventing authoritarianism

Unicameral parliamentary system. No divided government, no dueling House and Senate issues, no rural overrepresentation. Makes it much easier to pass legislation.

Does Chuck Schumer even support eliminating the filibuster? Let alone something more meaningful like disempowering the Senate.
meelar.bsky.social
But if he can't, he'll tell you to get a new car. Getting a new government is less of an option, and Chuck Schumer sure isn't saying we should do it.

Same goes for sports; most organized sports in their modern form originated in this period. Basketball was invented 1891, American football 1869 (and took its modern form over the next decades), baseball around the mid-19th c, modern association football about the same

The hukou system and international borders have many of the same downsides, and we shouldn't treat them as if they're entirely separate categories.

Good thing I didn't say it was!
