I can attest from personal experience that walking in NYC from the Village north to the West Side starting at 4:00 AM is a perfectly good way to get back to your hotel. And, trust me, walking through the garment district just as it and the sun are starting the day is a truly wonderful sight.

I strongly suspect straight White men from out of town being drunk with false courage and thus being unable to stop themselves from foolishly mouthing off to urban residents is the root cause behind the exaggerated claims of just how dangerous city streets and public transportation are.

Using dollars to measure the quality or value for goods and services provides a nicely behaved data that can be easily massaged by statisticians and manipulated by politicians. However, not everything that is important to new buyers of goods and purchasers of services can be turned into a value.
