I have spent review space on dumping on publishers, especially those that don’t edit their books. And those too cheap to pay for image rights that circumnavigate by using online links in footnotes. Making for totally screwed “bibliography”. Call them out.

Young Republicans joke about rape and gas chambers, use slurs, and talk about how much they love Hitler.

This isn't an exaggeration. These are the current and future leaders of the Republican Party, all who have 10x the funding of Dem youth orgs.

John Searle, a philosopher who was best known for a thought experiment he formulated, decades before the rise of ChatGPT, to disprove that a computer program by itself could ever achieve consciousness, died at 93.
John Searle, Philosopher Who Wrestled With A.I., Dies at 93
His blunt debating and imaginative theorizing about artificial intelligence and the human mind made him a leading scholar. But sexual-harassment allegations ended his career.

And when was that? Mokyr has been publishing for 50+ years.

I guess what I am implying with "pretense" is that we need to learn again how to live double lives, as ppl in dictatorships do. Not blind, but not naive, either.

But isn't the pretense of unaffectedness one way of resisting?

It always makes me happy when they give the Econ Nobel to historically minded people, like Joel Mokyr, who I remember as one of the heroes of my Econ history undergrad days. Congratulations! Here's to historical context!

It's called "underground film" for a reason.

In 2004, Parisian police were conducting a training exercise in the french catacombs and found, after moving past a desk and a tape playing audio of snarling dogs, a fully functional movie theater and bar. When they returned 3 days later, the equipment was gone, with a note: “Do not try to find us.”
Members of the force's sports squad, responsible
- among other tasks - for policing the 170 miles of tunnels, caves, galleries and catacombs that underlie large parts of Paris, stumbled on the complex while on a training exercise beneath the Palais de Chaillot, across the Seine from the Eiffel Tower.
After entering the network through a drain next to the Trocadero, the officers came across a tarpaulin marked: Building site, No access.
Behind that, a tunnel held a desk and a closed-circuit TV camera set to automatically record images of anyone passing. The mechanism also triggered a tape of dogs barking, "clearly designed to frighten people off," the spokesman said.
Further along, the tunnel opened into a vast 400 sq metre cave some 18m underground, "like an underground amphitheatre, with terraces cut into the rock and chairs". There the police found a full-sized cinema screen, projection equipment, and tapes of a wide variety of films, including 1950s film noir classics and more recent thrillers. None of the films were banned or even offensive, the spokesman said.
A smaller cave next door had been turned into an informal restaurant and bar. "There were bottles of whisky and other spirits behind a bar, tables and chairs, a pressure-cooker for making couscous," the spokesman said.
"The whole thing ran off a professionally installed electricity system and there were at least three phone lines down there."
Three days later, when the police returned accompanied by experts from the French electricity board to see where the power was coming from, the phone and electricity lines had been cut and a note was lying in the middle of the floor: "Do not," it said, "try to find us."

Radio Nachrufe auf englischsprachige Schauspielerinnen die dann aber Filmzitate der deutschen Synchro bringen. Wie sinnig ist das denn.

Industrial production is coming to economic realms that have so far been resisting it, from driving to research, the law, or therapy. For the time being, that will probably take the IKEA model: compete not on quality (AI will continue to be unreliable), but on price. Leave the high end markets 1/n
