None of my team knew either, which is insane to me; we’re crippling people for no reason.

Should be available at your local drug store, but pricing is usually high (annoyingly). I’d wait until we get a little more info but remain alert.

Chikungunya comes from the Kimakonde for contortion, because of its tendency to force people to curl up in agony. In my experience, that is the natural outcome of all isolationist policies.

Yes, this is another fund public health/end the shutdown/etc. post. But more than that, it is a plea for a “one world” approach to problems that are truly global.

But if you really care about this and are worried, you need to support action in places where chik is endemic. Just because NYC is threatened, some people will now take this seriously. But if we had a functioning CDC that participated in global response, NYC likely wouldn’t have seen cases.

The most important thing you can do to protect yourself and others is eliminate mosquito breeding grounds like standing water. Simple trash disposal can do a ton.

There is another version, VIMKUNYA, which uses a virus-like particle. And if this infestation spreads, we’re going to need it.

The live attenuated vaccine I got is also no longer available here in the US. Why? Because there have been some incidents with older adults who were administered it outside the guidelines. It got paused, recertified, then decertified by the FDA in an odd back and forth.

Now I, unlike my Sri Lankan team, am vaccinated. I went down to my local CVS and 20 minutes and a couple hundred bucks later, can safely tell those mosquitos to fuck right off.

This isn’t rare - more than 20% of those infected have serious joint pain a year later. Some of our employees still can’t type, one woman had to stop breastfeeding her baby because she couldn’t hold it. When I say this is nasty, I mean NASTY.

I work in Sri Lanka, which is coming off the worst chik year they’ve seen in a very long time. Unlike dengue, which sucks when you have it, chik sucks long after; for many, it causes debilitating joint pain that can last for years.

Ok, so this is a very big deal. Let’s thread it.

New York health officials have confirmed the first locally transmitted case of the chikungunya virus which causes high fever, joint pain and fatigue.

It’s usually a tropical virus, but there are now infected mosquitoes spreading in New York. (NYT)

“Do what works.” Yep, but an amazing amount of the time, people don’t even have a definition of what success is. If you don’t know what you want, how can you get it?

You are saying voting for Trump and believing in fascism are synonymous, in the same way you believe that voting for Trump and wanting troops in Portland are the same.

This would show they are not.
mattwallaert.com
Yes, I understand you think that.
mattwallaert.com
I’m interested in the experiment of seeing if they would directly vote for fascist tenets; please reparse the sentence.
mattwallaert.com
I don’t know why the question mark; you can’t label a bunch of folks as fascists if it isn’t a real and definable thing. And I’m not at all confident that they would vote for that definition but would be interested in the experiment.

There is a special kind of joy in encouraging childless adults to watch KPop Demon Hunters.
mattwallaert.com
If you took the actual tenets of fascism and put them to a vote in rural America, do you think they’d pass?
mattwallaert.com
A third of rural Americans voted for Harris.
mattwallaert.com
I think saying people “vote against their interests” is an interestingly paternalistic phrase that often belies how little we know about what they are interested in.

30%+ voted for Harris. Often in defiance of family and community. I’m not quick to write them off.
