Trump's mechanism to pay the troops during the shutdown is by far the most illegal budgetary action he's taken as POTUS, potentially setting the stage to break everything.

It's also needless because Congress would easily pass a troop pay bill if Johnson were willing to gavel in.

Long thread.

Soliciting information from officials is a journalist's job.

The Pentagon's new press policy would make reporters "stenographers parroting press releases, not watchdogs holding government officials accountable," explains @npr.org's Tom Bowman.
Opinion: Why I'm handing in my Pentagon press pass
Tom Bowman has held his Pentagon press pass for 28 years. He says the Pentagon's new media policy makes it impossible to be a journalist, which means finding out what's really going on behind the scen...

I was hoping he’d get his first goal before being sent down but oh well. He wasn’t quite ripe yet.
Is it politics for LA to declare a state of emergency to help immigrant residents? It seems like it’s national politics that have been imposed on your hometown from without.

Maybe we should listen to this guy and support our knowledge-cultivating institutions.

Destroying the Voting Rights Act has been the life's work of John Roberts
Wednesday is gonna be a rough day:

The Supreme Court will be hearing oral argument in a pair of cases that threaten what little remains of the federal government’s ability to protect voters from racial gerrymandering under the Voting Rights Act

Carney selling out our digital sovereignty just to provide OpenAI with cheap electricity and water would be phenomenally stupid
Canada has a long history of being surprisingly provincial. However, relinquishing digital sovereignty without a fight represents a strategic misstep in the broader project of nation-building, as technological autonomy increasingly shapes economic security, cultural identity, & political legitimacy.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.
Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?

Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

The English Revolution was in no small part sparked by King Charles I routing around parliament to find everything he wanted through non/legislative means, despite that being why Parliament exists. Over a century later, American colonists aware of this explicitly gave their Congress power to stop it
Unconstitutionally taking money that the law says must be spent on one purpose & using it for something else—when it's to establish personalist control over the FUCKING MILITARY—is about as dangerous a constitutional crisis/failure as you can imagine

The Office of Management and Budget sent a notification to Congress about their intent to use research and development funds to pay members of the military, two sources with direct knowledge tell NBC News.

A spokesperson for the OMB confirmed to NBC News that it plans to use the research and development funds and that there are two years' worth of funds available within the Department of Defense.
I thought of Raffi too. Also played for both teams. Kane stayed on his feet though!

@laurencewatt.bsky.social There will likely be street events all over false creek and downtown, all within walking distance. You didn’t even mention transit connections. You reported a hotel is going in across the street; Moshe implied that land should be parking instead! Honestly very strange
Hi @laurencewatt.bsky.social thanks for covering the financial issues around hosting the World Cup. But I think you accepted Moshe Lander’s claims uncritically. The idea B.C. place would be better suited to host if surrounded by parking lots should have been balanced by a more informed expert.
