Love that humans have decided to fix the climate crisis by developing AI to take us out before nature gets a chance.

the way you know this is bullshit is that it got laundered through a STEM publication. i was just at a talk with major vfx supervisors knocking down generative ai in film and tv for a whole host of technical and artistic issues it can’t resolve.

@bookclubmembers.bsky.social The man in Demeter is a selkie. The woman hid his cloak so he could not return to the sea.

@bookclubmembers.bsky.social So Wolves was originally created for a Japanese anthology. A few years later, when Becky Cloonan wanted to release the story in English, she discovered she had somehow lost the script she had written to be translated into Japanese. So the English version is a rewrite.

But, yeah, it is all an illusion, and the smart people know you have got to keep selling that illusion for the whole movie. You can’t make people’s brains too aware of the incongruent messages they’re getting.

I thought the 3D in the first Avatar was very good, occasionally great, but I still had a lot of problems with it. Avatar: The Way of Water was leagues better. The team clearly learnt a lot between movies.

Oh, and no dolly zooms. Doing that in 3D really fucks people up.
marktweedale.bsky.social
The biggest mistakr is they shoot and edit for 2D, not understanding that if you add 3D, there are certain things you can no longer do. It isn't just something you add—it is also subtractive. Say goodbye to depth of field, fast editing, shaky cam, 24fps, etc.—they give people migraines.
marktweedale.bsky.social
(As a general rule, add a third of a second for each shot. Make camera moves smooth as silk. Shake rarely and purposefully. And fucking crank that frame rate up high. 60fps minimum, but honestly, it should be more like 96fps. In 3D, I can see the individual frames at 48fps; it is not high enough.
marktweedale.bsky.social
So the film needs to be made in a way that chills things the fuck down. Everything in the shot should be in focus, so your eyes don't look at that and try to shift focus and fail. Shots need to be longer so that every time there is a cut, you have time to orient yourself in 3D space.
marktweedale.bsky.social
@bookclubmembers.bsky.social Regarding 3D: It is an illusion. Your focal length stays in the same place while mentally you perceive depth, and in moving shots, your eyes are telling you you are moving while your inner ear tells you you are still. These conflicting messages work your brain HARD.

The original English edition compared to the French edition (which sadly arrived a bit beat up).
Lightfall – Volume 1: The Girl & the Galdurian. English edition on the left, French on the right. Back cover on the French edition.

Oh, there are whispers there may be some Chrono Trigger music performed by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra at their Video Game concert in 2026! 🤞(Already confirmed there will be some of Nobuo Uematsu’s Final Fantasy themes.)
