Can confirm. BARB WIRE is better than any AI movie I have seen so far. And I just went to a festival of AI last week.

NARRATOR OF THAT DOCUMENTARY:

"The actors do not, in fact, own 100% of their performance."

CUT TO:

B-roll of an army of VFX artists working on computers fine tuning all the animation, and adding elements of character performance that was not able to be driven by the actors via motion capture.

Right but that one should have been called Now You 3 Me.

I noticed that the Visual Effects Society extended their deadline to apply to run for the international board of directors. They must not have many takers. Not surprising. I don't see the board providing any leadership or doing anything meaningful for members. The local sections do the heavy lifting

If you are looking for a movie that makes you feel nostalgic for ABC Afterschool Specials from the 1970s, have I got a movie for you.

They think Miyagi-Dough is so clever they say it like 20 times.

The award for martial arts tournament most obviously filmed on a volume goes to Karate Kid Legends. Also, how come none of the marketing for this movie said that it is all about Pacey’s Pizza Parlor?

And finally, the last scene should have stayed in the drafts. “Olives on, Olives off”? Really? 😬

Feels weird to not have Solar or Lower Decks in production anymore. So proud of what we accomplished on both shows in very different ways. Thank you to everyone on both productions, and to all the fans who tuned in!!
Star Trek Lower Decks art, four ensigns panicking on a starfleet shuttle with a sparking control panel. A cartoon alien family hugging and being nibbled on, from Solar Opposites.

Lower Decks is that show that you think is going to be a Trek parody, and then realize that it's Star Trek at its core while poking a little fun at the same things we all poke fun at.

OK yeah that’s a huge plus!

How does it compare to the VES Handbook? People seem to like the handbook, but I’ve generally found lots of it to be obsolete by the time each edition is printed, and so poorly organized that it’s useless as a reference when you need a quick solution to a problem.

On the positive side for me, the miniature work is pretty great for its time and the look of the physical production is much higher than other sci-fi TV from that era. It’s doing its best to be 2001 on a TV budget.

I’ve been slowly watching it. I’m about 8 episodes in. So far, every episode other than the pilot appears to be written while on LSD or at least heavily influenced by it. Some truly nonsensical plots with drug influenced visuals that are hard to take serious now.

I’m very very very late to the party but holy $#!+, THE CONTINENTAL is spectacular. The cinematography is gorgeous and the fight sequences second to none. Also, I love that night is realistically black, not cheap looking TV blue color timing. What a great looking show.

Would it be more convincing as San Dimas if the CGI’d some water slides into the water? 😀

Same with the VFX and art departments. All lifelong fans. Can quote you canon backwards and forwards.

if you hear a creative or a creative-adjacent person say something along the lines of “whatever you think about AI, it’s here to stay” they probably just got pAId

I'm perplexed at watching pundits in the trades struggling to explain Tron Ares' disappointing opening.

Was it covid? Do people just not like science fiction? etc. etc.

The main reason is pretty obvious: Tron isn't a popular franchise. Nobody's interested in nostalgia for a failed 1980s project.
