Listing monastics in the order of their arrival, not according to responsibility or discerned sanctity or anything else, is very key. Benedict lived at a time when wealth and honor meant everything to someone's importance. To Benedict, nothing distinguished anyone from anyone else. 🕯

In the Rule of St Benedict, it makes so much sense that a monastic must get their personal Lenten discipline approved by their superior.
