This thread is…concerning.

(I get more understated the more alarmed I am.)

This is absolutely bizarre. These LTNs, which from the start always had majority local support, & which were paid for by TfL, are now uncontroversial in practice. Removal of £2million OBGR improvements would be an unprecedented act of social vandalism & financial waste. Shameful stuff.
Letter from Lutfur Rahman and Aspire Councillors promising they’re still planning to rip out the LTNs as soon as possible.

I feel national flags need PR agents. Countries somehow need to get a grip and clear communication on when and where it’s acceptable to fly a flag. Somehow without playing into the hands of nationalists by being too forceful.
manbikesdog.bsky.social
It’s almost always context isn’t it; the odd flag on prominent buildings or many flags at time of celebration/sporting event is OK. Many flags flown in protests or on streets in the faces of those who people oppose is intimidation and ultimately nationalism.

Dutch defence chief says: in the event of war with Russia, Rotterdam will be defended at all costs but protecting Amsterdam “is not important to me” 😳

If you go back to the Netherlands another time, venture over to Arnhem. I'm not a fan of zoos, but theirs is amazing - in particular the under cover rainforest habitat. Also De Hoge Veluwe NP which is low-car, has bikes included in the entrance fee, and amazing art at the Kroller-Muller Museum.

We also took the bikes over on the ferry to de Biesbosch National Park. Really interesting place, nice to cycle around. There is a museum there about the people who lived and worked there, and the water management etc. www.biesboschmuseumeiland.nl/actief-en-ac...
Bekijk de wisselexposities bij het Biesbosch MuseumEiland
In de wisseltentoonstellingsruimte vind je steeds weer een nieuwe expositie. Buiten, rondom het museum, zijn wisselende exposities te bewonderen.

Dordrecht is a little to the east and a beautiful but down to earth little city by the river. Oldest city in the Netherlands (they say) and was where the the first step to forming a free Netherlands was taken. Can take the train there or a waterbus (also part of the OV chipkaart scheme).

Reform UK want to take public spending down to 35% of GDP — that’s a £275 billion cut, the equivalent of shutting down the NHS.

The Green Party knows the only way to rebuild our communities is by investing in our public services, not running them down and flogging them off to the private sector.
“Graphic showing Reform UK’s deputy leader Richard Tice in a blue suit speaking, with the word ‘CLOSED!’ in bold red and white text across the image. Behind him, faded images depict a hospital corridor and healthcare workers. The Green Party logo and imprint appear at the bottom.”

Good to see these calls.
It's a scandal that the consultation on pavement parking has been sat on for 5 years. Conservatives and Labour are both equally culpable and only care about driver convenience.

At this rate it won’t get done this parliament. I spotted this statement the other day.

Is this new? More can kicking? Why haven’t they published the consultation report yet?!!!
DfT: "That's why we have commissioned new research to better understand the impact of pavement parking and ensure the solutions we take forward work in practice."

I made an infographic map. Oxford's Congestion Charge scheme (from 29th Oct) is not like most congestion charge schemes, because you can get to most streets in the city without being charged. My impression is a lot of people haven't realised this.
A street map of Oxford.

Woodstock Road, Banbury Road and the streets in their immediate vicinity are coloured pink. Botley Road and streets off it are coloured green. Cowley Road, Iffley Road and Abingdon Road and streets off them are coloured blue. Streets in Marston and Headington are coloured orange. The ring road matches the colours at each junction and fades between colours as it goes around. A small area in the middle is coloured yellow, and labelled "Central Permit Area". THe Congestion Charge traffic filters are indicated by black circles circles with white segments, those white segments correspond on a 24 hour clock face with when the filter isn't operational (and the remaining black, when the filters are operational). Crosses mark other filters in the city that are enforced by ANPR but are not part of the Congestion Charge scheme.

Text at the top of the image reads "Temporary Congestion Charge for Cars in Oxford 2025-2026. Any road outside the Central Permit Area can be accessed without passing any traffic filers by using the Ring Road and selecting an approporiate exit junction (matching colours on this map)."

A key at the bottom matches the filter types, with text "Traffic Filters. Hollow Way & Marston Ferry Road 7-9am and 3-6pm. St Cross Road, Hythe Bridge Street, Thames Street and St Clements, 7am-7pm. £5 daily permit covers all Congestion Charge filters. Free Permits available. For example for residents, business use, health and car, SEND and disabilty. Congestion Charge permits do not apply for other filters, such as High Street or in East Oxford/Cowley."

Small print reads "Full details at https://www.oxfordshire.gov.uk/transport-and-travel" and "©@sjgower Contains OpenStreetMap data © OpenStreetMap contributors. Locations of highway filters are approximate and for overview purposes only. v1.3"

A nice little paean to Waterstones in Brussels here.
It’s probably not cool to like chain stores but Waterstones are IMO reliably excellent. Good to see the ones on the continent thriving!

Again, a deal to bring the hostages home is not a Middle East peace deal! Trump’s “experts” couldn’t achieve the latter if they tried.
Kushner and Witkoff probably think the Golan Heights is a housing project in the Bronx and Gaza is a retired football star
bencoates1.bsky.social
A totally obvious point which seems to escape some people:
Brokering a ceasefire in Gaza is a very good thing but absolutely not the same as securing peace in the Middle East.
For the latter you’d deserve a Nobel; for the former less so.
