One of my favorite standby tabletop themes just got spicier, because I hadn't previously realized that a chunk of AWS having an outage that likely takes out your primary and backup comms could also get Signal... and do your employees still keep each other's actual phone numbers offline? #hugops
Didn't go outside much yesterday so I decided it'd be cute to take a call on one of Oakland's beautiful public waterfront benches.

Ten mins in, somebody came up behind me and started feeding a HUGE flock of pigeons.

Guess who got buzzed by 30+ pigeons 3-5 times during a single business meeting?
Thank you so much, Richard!

(but really) I'm honored to be a part of this community and hope to continue participating in it for a long time to come ✨

If you like yelling about misuse of the passive voice, THIS IS IT.
Oh absolutely! And because the talks tend to be more broad-principles-and-practices-based rather than focused on very specific things like a new language feature, they stay useful for years to come! Part of my post-event processing is usually focused on how similar talks have shifted across years.

Repost to showe thyne appreciacioun for the social media folks at Merriam Webster, the best arounde!
Now that I've officially left Portland, I suppose I'll begrudgingly accept that this year's #monktoberfest is over. It was such a delight seeing you all and I'm excited to take what I've learned and reinforced back home.

Thank you, once again, to everyone who makes this happen. See you next year!
Ohhhhhh okay, well, the whole entire thing is worth watching for sure. Thanks for the clarification!
This is definitely still my preferred platform for social, but live posting an event is currently a somewhat smoother experience over there, so that's probably where I'll go for events that don't express a preference. Thank you, #monktoberfest, for your patience and assistance as I figure it out!
I posted a bit about my experience using Bsky to livepost for the first time on Mastodon: hachyderm.io/@MaggieFero/...

Key takeaways:
- handle discovery is hard
- I could've used bigger photos while alt texting them, but liked them on handles
- pasting in hashtags gets weird

I didn't realize until the very end, after I also posted that people should watch this, that it was not recorded 😭
I feel like I've mostly seen/used "core skills" the last few years but "power skills" is really nice marketing. Might need to work that one into the rotation!
@grimalkina.bsky.social Thank youuuu. It helps me SO MUCH with retention to do little summaries, too.
There's one more #monktoberfest talk but I stepped out for a work call and missed the beginning, so no live posting this time! Excited to catch up using other people's posts though, because I came in at a very strong part.
"Working in an authoritarian capitalist hellscape is more tolerable when you can dance" and you cannot dance without partners. Show up for those who need you! - @rstephens.me @ #monktoberfest

I was crying too much to livepost that last bit but it is beautiful and everyone should watch the video.
When you're trying to set culture, you need to prioritize high-trust environments and the delivery of feedback. You cannot let yourself be "casually cruel in the name of being honest" even just a little bit or trust and culture will degrade. - @rstephens.me @ #monktoberfest
Thank you!!! I really loved that talk. I was just chatting with @missamarakay.bsky.social during the break about how I want your little checklist from the side of the slides as a card to hang by my desk!
To enjoy our work, we need autonomy AND variety. Variety improves resiliency of teams in addition to enjoyment. - @rstephens.me @ #monktoberfest
You need to decide how and where to apply your agency. @rstephens.me calls the message on this slide "The Proletariat Serenity Prayer". #monktoberfest
To make it through, @rstephens.me says "We need to turn grind into play when we can" ; as Bluey says, "your legs don't feel as tired when you're having fun." #monktoberfest
9-9-6 is on the rise and, like the sturdy Pomeranians in Bluey, many young able-bodied people are willing to invest all their time in it; however, @rstephens.me reminds #monktoberfest that "Your company is not capable of loving you back."
Many of us are more in survival mode than dance mode right now, and if that's what you've got energy for that's okay! If you have energy to be at least a little in dance mode, though, times are bleak right now and you can make things better for yourself and others. - @rstephens.me @ #monktoberfest
