I feel this is quixotic. Working class leaders didn’t make things better for working class ppl, leaders of colour didn’t make things better for ethnic minorities, women leaders didn’t make things better for women. I like Polanski & Sultana but they don’t get my trust simply because they’re my gen.

Fundamentally one of the problems with "local taxes for local people" is the same one as "tax cigarettes to fund lung cancer research" - the amounts raised and the amounts needed for the project are basically unlinked.

When you add in being queer or trans and having to win over families in that regard, it can feel utterly impossible to pass the crip test too. Just hv to hope that partners don’t blithely agree w/ their families.

I’m also ND and can be VERY quiet in some social situations which probably doesn’t help their concerned opinions.

It took my 1st MIL years to take to me & that was only because I ensured she could be an involved grandparent despite her son disappearing off for years before he died.

My 1st husband’s family were very concerned about him dating/ marrying a cripple but then he died at the age of 40 of bowel cancer & he was older than me when we got together but I’m now older than he ever got to be. And they appreciated my support when he was sick.

I think ppl forget that most of us who don’t die prematurely will become disabled at some point in our lives & wouldn’t want their loved ones to be unloved if it happened to them.

My 1st MIL didn’t like Tim dating a cripple but he’s now dead and we’re close. But my 2nd MIL was fine at first but not when it came to the reality of it- and she’s generally the definition of toxic.

When I married my 1st husband, our marriage gift from his aunt was a letter (which his mum knew the contents of when she decided to hand it to us at our wedding) in which she detailed her disappointment that he wouldn’t just marry a cripple, he’d knock one up- the height of irresponsibility
