I will have you know that I’m ever reliable
(also, I may not always be there when you call, but I'm always on time and I gave you my all, now baby be mine)
Mar 11: MEMIE - Rae Thoma Rae Fetsa (2025)

From the ever reliable @lokpolokpo1.bsky.social comes this short delightful record, six tracks of lekompo, SA house with a bubblegum twist in the beats and bleeps, like the producers are turning the dials with one hand and playing pinball with the other
if you like “Highlife” you might also enjoy this recent-ish Ghanaian throwback (which comes with a bonus ‘82 PPPoll reference!)

*to my surprise, I can’t find any earlier occurrences of this pun. surely that can’t be right, but if it is, I will claim copyright from now on!
going “Korô Dia”: love the jazz piano being integrated into the more traditional Malian instrumentation here.

I’ve already allotted my bonus, so all I can do is pray for the orchestral manoeuvres in Dakar*
(and no, I wasn’t referring to “Hot, Hot, Hot” as Jamaican music. I just left it out completely by design!)
loving the various flavours of 🇯🇲Jamaican music here (also shouting out Ranking Ann in the previous group), but 🇬🇭Ghana has this one - altho I will admit that I love the intro most of all.

(Gyedu-Blay shout outs reggae himself too, so we’re good, I think)
easiest and most empathic of votes for the almost unbearable beauty of “Chorojô”. honourable mention (no stinginess involved here!) to the Valentine Brothers.
these B-sides groups are the realm of the non-western tracks, with one exception: “Moment Of My Life” is monumental and yes, momentous - and thank the gods for bonuses, because King Sunny Adé, duh.
pictured below: the exact moment Imagination broke down into flimsiness (head) first (complimentary)
could it be that I’m voting for Leee John, ooh-ooh ooh-ooh a-ha
to be fair, it *is* a useful bit of information. now that I know she has no intention of backing up her claim about making her love come ~all the way~ down I won’t have to waste my precious time watching the video
there’s always the Kingston way
Bam. Bam. that’s Trenchtown Rock, not Planet Rock.
still feel the need to start some shit.
will consider voting for “The Message” only when the need arises. fare thee well, Shalamar, you sure made this a poll to remember
captivated by The Rushen but swept up enough by the Jouberts to give them my bonus
oh lol
good cop / bad neighbour
no less than 6 of my 8 picks going thru, making it a total of 23/51 so far
they didn’t bat an eye when the Phils had their try
but yes, I was talking about the Nate Ruess/Jack Antonoff vehicle
hate that phrase, but gotta give it up for the pun 👏🏻
secretly relieved we got rid of “Ghostbusters” early. yes, I hate fun., no need to remind me.
the Kabbala track: soca made by Ghanaians from London?? love it, but the short clarinet (?) solo in the cumbia track won me over. no complaints about Smiley either. as for the toot-tooting, we all know that whole genre was invented over Xmas ‘81 by Shakin’ Stevens when he came up with “Oh Julie”
let’s keep things simple here: my vote goes to 🇨🇩Kanda Bongo Man and my bonus to 🇬🇭Thomas Frempong for the instrumental workout two-thirds in.
much better than the Mr T of course. The novelty-ness of it isn’t the problem tho, it’s about the fact that it sucks - and that people still vote for it regardless because lol that’s when we was kids bro
that Amazulu song doesn’t… well you can guess the rest, the Brenda bop does elevate me to some extent and Francky Vincent lights up the room, but nothing takes excitable me higher than the early stirrings of house. I’m voting Jamie on principle.
