"About $9 trillion sits in 401(k)s, the pool that private equity and venture firms have their eye on. Even capturing a sliver of that market — say 5 percent — would represent hundreds of billions of dollars in new capital under management and billions in steady fees, regardless of performance."
Always a good time to think about who benefits from deregulating what kinds of investments can be purchased in a 401k

It really feels like they’re trolling our autocrat.
'When authoritarians seize power, it is crucial to recognize courageous defenders of freedom who rise and resist,' the Norwegian Nobel Committee said as it announced Maria Corina Machado as the winner of the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize
What was not so funny was the result of years of artificially low interest rates and rampant stock market speculation

(Altho, I'm not sure anyone feels right now--not even investors into AI infrastructure--the way many did in the summer before the 1929 crash, that good times will roll forever.)
Pretty funny, Heather Cox Richardson
Great old goblin poem from Jeremy Noel-Tod's Substack, Some Flowers Soon:
Is it 1983 again? Huh. I guess U.S.-backed coups never get old. I mean, why have super-cool military toys if you can't throw them around your own hemisphere??

My dearest Martha, I send you all my love from this war-torn ravaged place, where our hardships surpass comprehension. Yesterday, a barista gave me a whole milk latte when I specifically ordered skim. Later, a young woman with strangely colored hair glanced at me disapprovingly.

Ok I did not bring it at Rosh Hashanah services today a la Eric Adams, but two of my students have their naturalization interviews tomorrow, so I am kinda feeling the stars and gold brocade
Eric Adams and others at Rosh Hashanah services. Adams wears a dark blue coat with gold brocade and stars of David.

Omg, you did it! ABC just announced that “Jimmy Kimmel Live!” will return on Tuesday after the late-night host’s suspension became a flashpoint for free speech. We estimate that around 250,000 of our supporters canceled their Disney+ and Hulu accounts in protest. The pressure worked, money talks!
For now, M. Gessen (gift link).

For tomorrow, think of ways to cultivate what is not "crude, harsh, and gratuitously mean."

New York Times talking to itself again
Oh good point--I wonder if new episodes will be released within the billing period?? And yes, let's hope the actors use their visibility and leverage! *Fingers crossed*
I agree. But I also welcome the opportunity to push back in a specific, meaningful way. I think my son and I will watch the remaining seasons of The Durrells in Corfu on Masterpiece, and then dig into Criterion?
Also Hulu, owned by Disney (sorry to say goodbye to Only Murders in the building, but I just cancelled my Hulu subscription)
My son and I love the show Only Murders in the Building, but I have cancelled my Hulu subscription. Hulu is owned by Disney, as is ABC. I hope Robert Iger at Disney sees a solid hit to profits after throwing Jimmy Kimmel and free speech under the bus.
Sort of begs the obvious question of what CA taxpayers are getting for all the bucks we send to the federal govt. ICE thugs in big trucks, I guess? So you see where the inevitable questions lead us
