BBC4 is repeating Bryan Magee’s 1987 series, The Great Philosophers, and I introduce it next Monday 13th at 22.30. I remember being very impressed when it went out that my wonderful PhD supervisor, Myles Burnyeat, was in the very first episode!

This deserves more attention than it has received.

Gove: "we were too anxious as a government to secure those deals in order to show that Brexit was working".

Exactly as so many of us warned at the time, and as the government denied at the time.

Totally agree. Sadly it was an attitude and a practice - that I came across a lot in my professional life. As Jenny Lee said - give people the best. And if it’s complex - give people the means to encounter it and meet its complexity - do not pretend something is what it isn’t.

Most important thing today is the release of hostages and the hope of a real end to the killing and destruction in Gaza. But sure, let him take his victory lap. The really hard work now starts. Then we’ll see how serious this peace and this president is.

My comment: Not a surprise at all. The 2 situations v different of course. But, experience in negotiations which have led N Ireland to a more peaceful situation, cannot be ignored, IMO. Which means that the current campaign to defenestrate Jonathan Powell cd be v damaging to Middle East IMO.
