There are reports that the *entire* office of special education at the US Dept of Education has been cut. These hardworking folks ensure kids with disabilities get equal access to a quality education.

America’s children deserve better than this.

The TikTok video below is interesting, but also, unfortunately, way too long. I think watching the last minute or two, & combining that with reading this badly headlined NY Times article, would be worth everyone’s time www.nytimes.com/2025/10/11/o...

This Isn’t Crisis Response, It’s Crisis Construction www.nytimes.com/2025/10/11/o...
Nearly nine months into President Trump’s second term, immigration enforcement has become the administration’s primary political weapon — not to solve problems, but to manufacture fear, provoke outrage and stage an illusion of control. This isn’t a crisis response. It’s crisis construction.

The president’s team vowed to target gang members, murderers and rapists, but we’re not just rounding up violent offenders. We’re arresting working parents, students, asylum seekers and even U.S. citizens, to create made-for-TV crackdowns.

These Students Are Scared. Friends and Teachers Are Their Protectors. www.nytimes.com/2025/10/11/n...
As President Trump’s immigration crackdown has begun to target more underage migrants, New York schools have become a quiet locus of resistance, with teachers, classmates and neighbors banding together in their defense. At least five migrant students have been detained or deported since January in New York City.

Another 466 employees being laid off from the Department of Education. Remember this was the plan all along: Traumatize the federal workforce. Dismantle ED. Break the institutions.

Trump: "AI is based on information. I hope they're right about information. I don't know. You've gotta make a lot of money to-- there's gotta be a lot of information out there, but that seems to be pretty hot. We're leading the world on information on AI."

I'm fine with AI assessing online game results (Blooket, Wayground) & for low/no-stakes grammar practice (Quill) or pronunciation practice for ELLs (Speakable). Or, like this poster describes, students using it as part of a structured process to help with initial self-assessment. That's about it.

As with so much in the AI discussion, the debate about using AI to grade isn't really a debate about AI but about education. Make sure to read @marcwatkins.bsky.social wise words on faculty using AI to grade. marcwatkins.substack.com/p/the-danger...
This isn’t really about AI at all. It’s about what we believe education is for. If higher education is just a credential farm, then efficiently sorting students into rankings makes sense and by all means, automate away! But I think most of us believe that education is more than that. For me, the purpose of higher education is about human development, critical thinking, and the transformative experience of having your ideas taken seriously by another human being. That’s not something we should be in a rush to outsource to a machine.

Unelected billionaire private equity guy says colleges must bend the knee or "they need not accept federal funding."

1) Get bent.
2) It's high time for Congress to regulate your predatory business model out of existence.
