Well yes the assumptions were incredibly optimistic about the fraction of EV mode usage certainly. Especially given the limitations of recent models. I am still bullish on PHEVs utility. But I'm also from a place where EVs cannot be used reliably due to minimal charging networks.
I even asked MHAs about it. None were willing to provide me estimates in 2024 dollars, and none could point me to the exact calculations used to get these nominal figures. Without a frank and transparent discussion of these types of things it was pretty irresponsible to move ahead with the MOU...
I just hope that the presentation is open and transparent unlike the current MOU. I've been blown away that there hasn't been more commentary on the failure of Gov to provide numbers in 2024 dollars.
Can you point me to a study that demonstrates this effect using a stratification based on a comparison of extended range PHEVs (>70 km) versus low range PHEVs (<40 km)?

Remember, a lot of models of PHEV (kia/hyundai etc) can't run a heater without the engine on so models matter too...
As someone who was in the market for a PHEV for a couple years (before buying an EV). There's quite a difference between PHEV ranges of new vehicles in 2020-2023 and those on the market today. Around here quite a number of PHEV models were only getting 30 km electric range in winter 3 years ago.
Yes. It's stating that for low range PHEVs, they spend the majority of their time using gas. Which is not surprising. The way the title is worded makes it seem that PHEVs themselves are producing more emissions than promised versus driving habits being the caused. There's a huge distinction there.
Meanwhile, it's being used to say plug-in hybrids are bad for emissions. I'm sorry but if you can't afford an EV, have a sub-50 km commute or have to have more range than EVs can offer then plug-in hybrids (and especially extended range ones) are a great option.
This story (which is being shared around in many forms) is misleadingly titled. The story basically says if you drive your plug-in hybrid beyond its electric-only range it's not a big emissions improvement.

Duh! Older plug-in hybrids have limited electric-only range so there should be no surprise.
Plug-in hybrids pollute almost as much as petrol cars, report finds

Analysis of 800,000 European cars found real-world pollution from plug-in hybrids nearly five times greater than lab tests

The only thing I can guess is that they did not do much polling outside of the south coast which is a liberal stronghold in Labrador. Consider that one of the ridings had a 95% vote share for the PCs yet pollsters had a huge margin for liberals in Lab. Tells you the samples were unrepresentative
The polling and Labrador was putrid. Even on first glance the results from the pollsters for labrador seemed incorrect. Everyone from the area knew that Lela was supremely popular. And Keith was always going to get quite a bit of support. Meanwhile pollsters had huge liberal margins there...
Also uh take a look at Andrea Barbour's bio. Can't see how it isn't a positive thing to have a knowledgeable ecosystem scientist at the table.
The mou was incredibly misleadingly presented. So there was a lot of skepticism about it. If it was in fact the best available deal there's no reason that the details shouldn't have been made public. They wouldn't even present numbers in 2024 dollars..
I'm not sure I agree with that. I also don't think there's any appreciable difference between the parties on climate change in NL. One is more explicit but no real difference behind the scenes. Hopefully Lela Evans is in cabinet.
Disappointed there's no NL livestream
I really wish that the new version of MERRA was out. It's taken way too long to have a no (major) surface obs alternative reanalysis product.

Yankees fans streaming out of the ballpark. Great to see.
Trudeau will have a very complicated legacy. And part of that will include the some of the points you raise but also the instances where performatory reconciliation has actually left some lasting negative impacts. My home region (Labrador) has been torn apart by failing to care about details...

A MOMENT IN BLUE JAYS HISTORY.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is the first Blue Jays player ever to hit a postseason grand slam! 🔥
Atlantic Canada. Beautiful region. Newfoundland and Labrador in particular is the best fit for someone who loves exploring the outdoors. Lots of winter activities too.
