My grad school and scholarship application are IN. By the early scholarship deadline which is 85 days before the usual one. I am tired but pleased.
A glowing laptop screen that reads University of Cambridge applicant portal and something like "your application has been received. The tiny pic is too small and I can't even read it. But they received the application. The laptop has some shark stickers on it.

Sometimes the #Birds are photogenic. Other times, they look like dinosaurs. 🪶
A red male cardinal with a great deal of grey in the wing feathers, and white and grey floof underneath, in a 3/4 face away profile with a bright red crest on the red platform of the birdfeeder and with green birch leaves in the background.

Damnit, I cannot read this book now, I'm in the midst of one, have another due at the library and have a huge deadline in 2 days. Curse you, vile tempter.

I actually said mine aloud at a dinner recently and my 22yo son took me aside after and said, Mom, you can't say things like that. He asked me not to say it aloud again. Which makes it sound like it was racist which it was not, but it was unhinged. So, to honor how sweet he was about it, nope.

This pic seems pretty but is actually upsetting. Walking down the street on 13 October in Minneapolis and THE LILACS ARE IN BLOOM? AGAIN? I was so perturbed I plucked the lower left tuft and kept smelling it to reassure myself of its wrongness. Oh, climate change. You scare me.

Hello kind people of Bluesky. Today & tomorrow I'm toiling on my app for postgrad English study & a scholarship, due Wed. I've got a fair amount of anxiety. I'd sure appreciate any kind words or cute pics anyone can send my way. Here is a cute sparrow and a bumblebee hard at work. #Birds 🪶
Brown and grey sparrow looking to left with yellow beak on red platform of birdfeeder, rather dapper except for the giant seed on his beak. Greenery behind. Pink flower with a yellow and black fuzzy bumblebee working assiduously to gather every scrap of pollen on this mid October day in Minnesota. Green lawn and sidewalk behind.

Interesting how there is a willful ignorance to speculate on what might be causing many of the ills on the front page of today's Star Tribune. Also, while "dubious boondoggle" is a poetic and amusing phrase, isn't it also redundant?
Front page of Star Tribune paper with headlines about lack of innovation, shootings, food price surges and lack of childcare. Headline reads "Anoka County sues MNDOT over 'dubious boondoggle' of a project"

Oh, hello, good morning, this seems very promising for the Star Tribune, who is not something I've felt in...a while.

When Trump was elected, I decided I would try to put my column writing energy towards somewhere local. I wanted to write in my communities about stuff that was happening.

Not all plans work out, but this one seems to be so far. I am looking forward to a slightly more formal process.

A black capped chickadee today, plus a sparrow pulling a pose. #birds 🪶
Small black and white bird looking left, on red platform with greenery surrounding. Small light brown sparrow, looking up and to the right, on red platform, with greenery surrounding.

"We could find no reason for marrying x except the luxury of a bath every day." 131 I am continually delighted by Bella's comments in The Juniper Tree! #NYRBwomen25

The sharks have joined the protests. Wonder for no reason how much an inflatable shark suit costs

The Juniper Tree is giving serious Jane Eyre vibes: the Mom as Aunt Reed, Bernard as Rochester _and_ St John, Tommy as Adele, Bella as Jane...I'm excited to see how this ends! #NYRBwomen25

In other good news, we finally have a full complement of yard signs, hooray!

From the Dorothy L. Sayers Society, the clip from October 8, 1985 of the golden wedding anniversary of Peter Wimsey & Harriet Vane + commentary on it from the next day. Cheers to the happy couple, who just celebrated their 90th, are still in print & beloved! Join the DLS Society! www.sayers.org.uk

It's #LetterboxdFriday and here are my #LastFourWatched all at the @trylon.org with the end of the summer Nazi series and the start of the October Nixon horror series. All first watches for me!
4 movie posters: Hour of the Wolf, black and white with pink band, man in stage makeup with hands forward. The Stepford Wives with blue white and yellow bands under an image of Katharine Ross's head and hand, as if chipped from a mannequin. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, white with a yellow doorway on the right with a guy bursting out holding a chainsaw. The Keep, in dark blues, violets and pink, in giant letters on a hill with two figures framed in a small glowing yellow door

Perfect porch weather in Minneapolis today. Reading and loving The Juniper Tree by Barbara Comyns, the last pick for #NYRBwomen25 with coffee and a few friends from the shiver. #FridayReads What are you reading today?
On a low table with a plastic grid cover, a copy of Barbara Comyns' The Juniper Tree with a dark and white cover, and from left, a grey and white hammerhead shark pup plush, a small blue and white IKEA blah shark plush, a black mug that reads "Write like a motherfucker" in Red type in a heart shape" with steam rising, up to a window with green birch leaves and sunshine backlighting them, and a turquoise and light blue spotted whale shark plush.
kjboldon.bsky.social
Catching up on Comyns' Juniper Tree. Doesn't feel at all set in 1980, more like in some vague misty post WW2 period. #NYRBwomen25

I brushed bacon grease on the outside of pan fried quesadillas, and also used the bacon grease for eggs.

He's modeled on the guy parodied in The Man Who Came to Dinner, whose name I'm blanking on. And the fat shaming in the book is so overt and weird. There's even a passage where they make fun of his pointy eyeballs.
kjboldon.bsky.social
That movie has so many hideous lampshades

He's posing in the sunshine for his presidential portrait, and she would like a word #Birds 🪶
Red male cardinal vamping shamelessly on an orange platform with greenery behind. Bird body/breast faces left and orange beak is up and to the right. A shift of bright sun divided the breast in half. Seriously, it looks staged. Grey brown female cardinal with orange beak open as if she's got something to say, on a red platform with greenery behind.

He's so handsome and charming that he makes it work! And, Mrs. Danvers as Laura's friend!

I got behind on The Juniper Tree by Barbara Comyns, but am back. Her childlike narrators who are free of malice are captivating. Then to find two of my faves mentioned--3rd Man, ice cream? Bliss "we heard chimes playing a few bars from the Harry Lime theme & Tommy ran to catch the ice cream van" 65
