Silloin kuin tällaiset ”mahdottomat” yhteydet todennetaan empiirisesti niin sehän sitä uutta tietoa luo. Nimittäin sellaista mitä ei aiemmin kuviteltu. Onko se sitten kiinnostavaa tai onko sillä laajempaa merkitystä on toki eri asia

Tietenkin mekanismien tutkiminen tuo tähän lisätietoa, on kiinnostavaa itsessään ja auttaa yleistämään ja luomaan uusia (vahvempia) hypoteeseja. Joten en minä ainakaan sitä heittäisi roskakoriin vaikkei se aina tarpeen ehkä olekaan ja joskus (ainakin sos. tieteissä) niissä on päälleliimatun maku

Kausaatio (X->Y) voidaan todentaa (oletusten pitäessä paikkaansa) ilman tietoa mekanismeista. Jos satunnaistettu koe tuottaa tuloksen, jonka mukaan X vaikuttaa Y:hyn ja sama tulos saadaan kerta toisensa jälkeen, niin voimme hyvällä todennäköisyydellä päätellä että näin on vaikkemme tietäisi miksi

Watts kritisoi etenkin Verstehen -traditiota, jossa ymmärrettäviä mekanismeja helposti liimataan selityksiksi havaituille yhteyksille. FN tietty ratsastaa otsikollaan, mutta sen takaa löytyy ihan hyvä pointti teoretisoinnin (väärin)käytöstä

Syksyisin pitämällämme sosiologian ”peruskurssilla” (siis postgrad-taso) luetutimme ao. tekstit, jotka herättivät keskustelua juuri tästä aiheesta doi.org/10.1086/678271 ja doi.org/10.1177/0735... Kumpikin ravistelee hieman sosiologian yleistä näkemystä teoriasta ja mekanismeista

X voi tosiaan vaikuuttaa Y:hyn ilman että meillä on hajuakaan siitä, miksi näin tapahtuu. Sikäli tosin puolustaisin mekanismien jahtausta, että a) hauska on tietää, ja b) niiden ymmärtäminen vahvistaa teoriaa joka parantaa yleistettävyyttä ja vähentää false positivien riskiä

Varmasti näin. Mutta jos kolme toisistaan riippumatonta kvasikokeellista tutkimusta päätyy eri aineistoilla (jotka ovat suuria) samaan johtopäätökseen, niin aiempien totuuksien uudelleen tarkastelu voi olla perusteltua (oli lopputulema sitten mikä tahansa).

Ok. No, nopeasti tulee mieleen a) raskausajan olosuhteiden merkitys sosioekonomisiin tulemiin, ja b) ehkä turvallisen säteilyaltistuksen rajaa tulisi harkita uudelleen (ei tietty vain näin tutkimusten perusteella).

Mitä tähän tutkimukseen tulee niin se oli kaverin gradu, joten kaipa ihan riittävää

Tulos on käytännössä tismalleen sama Ruotsista ja Norjasta saatujen kanssa. Mekanismin ymmärtäminen toki lisää kausaaliväitteiden uskottavuutta (koska vahivstaa hypoteesia ja vähentää false positiven tod.näk.) mutta lopulta suurempi merkitys on asetelmalla ja tulosten kumuloituvuudella
