The post-show phone call to my brother, usually so gushing and effusive, began thusly: "What the f*ck was that?"

If you read one Diane Keaton tribute today, make it this one.

"... though many people associate her mostly with the brainy doodle of a performance she gave in Annie Hall—a brilliant one—she was astonishingly versatile. She was great without ever trying to *be* great..."

One of the signature actresses of her or any era, and a woman who paved a path most Hollywood actresses -haven't- followed: dressing to express joy and a sense of self. On Diane Keaton: time.com/7325208/dian...
The Astonishing Versatility of Diane Keaton
Keaton, who died at 79, is often remembered for her comedic performance in Annie Hall, but she did so much more throughout her career.

The last four guys on that list were staples of my fantasy teams.

Chris Smith was all over this one!

How many batters in tonight's Red Sox lineup will be part of their next playoff series victory? This is a day-game-after-extra-innings-night-game-on-getaway-day kind of lineup.

Hahahaha...I don't know why I'm defending him. A residual NBC reflex.

Again, I'm not disputing that! I'm just saying, are we calling him a phony because he played a Red Sox fan in a movie but is a Yankees fan in real life?
jtomase.bsky.social
Doesn't hurt, it's true.

No fan of the milquetoast Fallon, but are we really holding an acting role against him??

The analytics revolution focuses on tunnels and launch angles and induced vertical break, but sometimes it's as simple as who catches the ball. For the last two nights, that team has been the Yankees.

As Red Sox players poured into the clubhouse, goggles on their heads and beer cans in their hands, the plastic was still being hung on lockers with little care.

It was time to party.

Played for Connie Mack, who was born in 1862!

The next week was Jim Bowman's TD vs the Raiders. I interviewed him about it like 30 years later.

I watched every episode and never skipped the title sequence, and only now am I noticing that Peter Berg of Friday Night Lights fame is credited over the kneeling football player.

Oh man. I have no recollection of Lobel doing play by play. That's amazing. But I can name every guy on that team who flashes by. 52 - Johnny Rembert, 24 - Robert Weathers, 61 - Ron Wooten, 77 - Big Ken Sims, etc...

This is insane. What Tom Shales was to Larry Sanders, Alan Sepinwall is to The Simpsons--a critic worthy of a name drop. If he's not the greatest TV writer of all-time, he's top three. On the bright side, I suspect he's about to discover just how big his (paying) audience is. I'll be signing up.

Some news: yesterday was my last at Rolling Stone. For now, I'm going solo, doing all my TV reviewing, recapping, etc., at my newsletter. I hope you'll consider subscribing. Many more details here:

Jesus. Now the audio is ahead of the action. Annoying.

16 percent. Oof. Time for a rewatch.

Like the Yaz rookie card homage.

So you speak for all Red Sox fans. Got it.

Red Sox won trade soundly = their climb up standings while Giants had one of worst records in baseball for 4-6 weeks after deal. Breslow: "There is a real chance that at the end of the season we'll be looking back and we've won more games than we otherwise would have."

Devers in that span: .318-6-19-1.059. He's also on pace to become the first player since Justin Morneau in 2008 to appear in 163 games.

Remember the Rafael Devers trade the Red Sox won so soundly? After Patrick Bailey's walkoff grand slam last night, the Giants are only a half game out of the playoffs. Since Aug. 23, they're 14-4.

Not the point, but I had been listening to the Misfits for 40 years before I realized that Glenn was not, in fact, a rippling 6-foot-2.
