I help academics protect time for writing and resist overwork. Meaningfulness matters. You are more than your job. I also make things with textiles, read romances, sing alto in a choir. Subscribe to my newsletter: JoVanEvery.co.uk/newsletter

If writing is what makes this job meaningful for you, it will make a difference to protect time for it, even when things are busy or uncertain. A Meeting With Your Writing can help. 4 sessions weekly. Will 1 of them work for you? academicwritingstudio.co.uk/a-meeting-wi...
A bright home office space with wooden desk and comfortable chairs nearby. The walls are painted a warm dark green and there's art, textiles and plants to decorate. The Academic Writing Studio logo sits nearby.

This leads us to the right question:

How do we design work so people can work well (with autonomy, clarity, and deliberate coordination) regardless of WHERE they do it?

THAT is flexible work design.

Everything else is managing symptoms.

I feel seen, but also, this is why in science at least, as you become more senior, give your mentees your absolutely best ideas if they've got the fresh legs to kick them about. Earlier career researchers are often exploited but it should be a very mutually beneficial relationship.

I've never had more ideas and never had less energy.

I can probably also give you the correct number for booking a ferry to Newfoundland, too. There is a jingle. It was on the radio a lot. I've never actually been to Newfoundland.

the only reason I don't remember many of mine is because I've moved a lot.

I do, however, remember my friend's landline number in Birmingham from the late 90s.

he's not wrong. And if that's the worst case scenario, it would be annoying but not devastating.

I suspect you won't get that outcome.

It's not a 'race debate', it's plain old racism.

Carer health and safety is already a major issue that's barely discussed outside the profession, compounded by demand and extractive practices of employers.

Unfortunately this workforce, like those they care for, hold zero interest for most people

Hey Colorado residents, particularly people in Fort Collins, but also those who are somewhat near: my sister and brother in law are running a study on an easy, portable method to help maintain indoor air quality during adverse outside events (like smoke or pollution).

That’s the trouble I suppose. But at some point you need an answer to move on.

And you already know at least some people thought this was a good idea and worth pursuing, even if this journal won’t publish it in the end.

🤞

That is a while. Long enough to justify an email query.

😩 I fear you are right

I hope those buttons are functional so you can breastfeed and it looks fabulous. I’m sure you can figure out an occasion to wear it.

Defensive got the first draft written. That means you’ve got the pieces you need. You can revise for less defensive. You’ve got this.

And you are not alone in this. i hope the person who gave you that feedback also reassured you about the things you don’t need to be defensive about.

We get that kind of weather here a lot. It is annoying.

Congratulations to all of us who are managing to keep the overwhelm and panic at bay. Even if it is only for short periods of time.

Just because you aren’t quite sure why you are feeling this way doesn’t mean it isn’t justified. Keep breathing and doing all the other things that help. Try to stop worrying about what caused it or if it’s justified.

Tbh I’m not sure it’s justified for any of us not to feel overwhelm and panic

This time last year I knit a lot of tiny sweaters and mittens that became Christmas decorations. Scrap yarn. < 90 mins cast on to cast off.

Hunter Hammerson has several patterns for this kind of “tiny nonsense”. I used her mitten pattern. There are also stars, hearts, etc.
