my latest investigation for @consumerreports.org is based on months of reporting and 60+ lab tests of leading protein supplements

we found that most protein powders and shakes have more lead in one serving than our experts say is safe to have in a day (🧵)

to quote ex-chancellor of the UC system Clark Kerr: "The university is a series of individual entrepreneurs held together by a common grievance about parking"

least complimentary thing I can say about this novel: it would be easy to teach with Robinson Crusoe and Coetzee’s Foe (which I don’t particularly care for even though I am a big fan of his work generally)

Now I want to go to Orkney! And kill some grasping 18th century landlords while I’m at it!!

Next up: Under the Net by Iris Murdoch. Also, surprise, spending the evening reading a physical book did in fact make me feel better than reading “news” on my phone

I’m finally reading Clear by Carys Davies and it’s such a lovely little novella….

I read this whole thing in one sitting and cried….at least twice. Dying languages, cold islands, Presbyterians in love, twenty words for mist and wave, the Scottish Clearances, an old blind cow, the sound of seabirds overhead, something breaking /something born. Loved all of it!

years later and despite much evidence to the contrary, I still maintain that Tana French is just a front for Donna Tartt, who is actually writing those books

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

If it also applies to people shifting status....that's a much, much bigger pool of people and it will be a much bigger impact. What percent of humanities hires at American universities are people on F1/OPT visas? I'd guess...10%, maybe more? & I bet in STEM that number is substantially higher
johnmkuhn.bsky.social
Honestly given American hiring patterns in the humanities the people who are going to get hit the hardest by this (if it only applies to people with no current visa status) are Oxbridge/Toronto grads, who are the huge majority of people hired cold from outside the US.

Admin has basically said they are trying to get clarity about the policy before making any firm statements, so we're all waiting. The timing of this is annoying (and not just at Bing), bc most fall ads have already gone up and it would have been nice to at least note restrictions, if they exist.

My university hasn't issued guidelines about this but it is a safe assumption that we cannot afford to pay $100k per visa (the fee used to be $2k? $5k?). We just won't be able to hire people with no current visa status (and possibly people adjusting status as well, tho that's TBD).
johnmkuhn.bsky.social
If it's just the first category, the impact will be smaller. Humanities depts don't hire THAT many people who truly have no prior affiliation with American universities. If the fees also apply to people adjusting status (i.e. intl students in US PhDs), it will be catastrophic in scale.

it's hiring season at my university and the rollout of the new H1B visa fees has been a mess. Seems like the fees will definitely apply to people with no current status but the government hasn't clarified if the fees also apply to ppl adjusting status (i.e. OPT/F1 shifts).
