Why is Hochul so good all of the sudden

Q: Politico reported on a group chat of young Republicans. Does this just reflect some bad apples?

HOCHUL: Some bad apples? These are the future of the GOP. This is so vile it's hard to find the words to put into context ... there's gotta be consequences ... this bullshit has to stop.

But yeah, for all of Bernie's virtues, and he has many (I voted for him twice), the "Bernie Bros" were definitely part of the vanguard of post-real politics
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
Before then, even when discussing politics with people I vehemently disagreed with, we could usually come to some sort of consensus about what is true and what is false, at least in broad strokes.

I think the first time I really got the nauseating sense that large swaths of other people occupy an unrecognizable reality was actually the 2016 primary. Obviously it has only gotten worse since then
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
I think it should be a priority of any future democratic government to restore our sense of shared reality

I'm going to bang this drum again: if you're a member of the Maine primary electorate, you should vote for whoever you like the most and not try to okay 11D electability chess

I’m not thrilled about Mills running for Senate at 77 either but getting Collins out is no joke and if Platner can’t win the primary he didn’t have the juice for the general anyway

My point about 11D electability chess put more succinctly
whstancil.bsky.social
If Platner can't beat Janet Mills he probably can't beat Sue Collins.

And it's all downstream of the sort of one-size-fits-all content moderation that I think they're trying to break free from, which I support

The internet has become more and more sterile over my lifetime. There was a lot of bad stuff on the internet of old, and I'm glad that's gone, but it's annoying that people are having to say stuff like "unalive" and "pew pew" to even talk about death

So Kilmer Abrego-Garcia will not challenge a deportation to Costa Rica, who has agreed to for him residency, but DHS won’t agree to send him there because it’s not cruel enough.

www.nytimes.com/2025/10/10/u...
For weeks, Mr. Abrego Garcia, a Salvadoran national who is married to a U.S. citizen, has made clear that he would not challenge his deportation if he were sent to Costa Rica, which has promised him legal residency and guaranteed that he would not be sent back to El Salvador.

But the Trump administration has refused to deport him to Costa Rica, and in an earlier hearing this week, Judge Xinis pressed the administration to consider the option or clarify why it was unacceptable.

the position of the administration it seems is that it is illegal discrimination and divisive racism for historically excluded groups to organize on that basis to improve their position. it’s basically just a genteel version of david duke’s complaint that there wasn’t a NAACP for white people
victorerikray.bsky.social
I know it is beside the point because this administration simply wants resegregation but conferences for Black professional associations have always been open to everyone. Typically, the started as a response to white exclusion, and did not replicate that.

Very bad: OSU unilaterally cancelled the registration of grad students attending the joint conference of the National Society of Black Physicists and the National Society of Hispanic Physicists. And OSU won't fund recruiting at the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

Bernie's actual admin would have been a disaster if he staffed it like he staffed his campaign

You never get to see the counterfactual, but I'm not convinced anyone else wins in 2024 either. Some may not even win in 2020 (I think both Klobuchar and Warren lose, and not just for sexism reasons).
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
I actually think he wasn't a bad 2020 choice, he maybe wasn't the top choice for most, but he was a strong second choice for a huge chunk of rank and file (offline) dems. I do think he loses a 2024 primary though, because of his age and Gaza

Go back to 2005 and try to convince someone that a black guy with an Arab middle name could be elected president. They would tell you that the stereotypical suburban swing voter would never, ever vote for someone like that.
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
To be clear, the argument is not that voting based on electability is bad in theory. It's that it's futile. Nobody knows what voters actually like, all they have to go by are media stereotypes that are often badly misinformed
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
If enough people like Mills (or dislike Platner) so much that they are willing to overlook her age, that means she's likely the more "electable" of the two. If people think her age is a deal breaker that means she probably doesn't have the juice
johnbrownstan.bsky.social
The best signal of electability is building an enthusiastic coalition of people who genuinely like you in the primary.
