The story never says that open arms is wrong, but it shows the actual consequences of sticking to it as opposed to just changeing like odie dose and polites dieing in the first act.

it's no longer "Open arms dies with poilites"

It's "open arms killed polities."

Polities never let's go of his open arms, but that's also how he dies. we see him stuggle for half a musical to cling onto the beleaf that "we'll be fine if we're leading from the heart" and now odie after looseing evrything finaly becomes the monster that can get him home to his wife.

the wonded Odie pleads with his old frend not to kill the cow.

But it's to late.

when zuse says "Chose: you or your crew"

It's no longer just my wife or my ship of faceless nobodies.

It's choseing his wife or his best frend.

But polites already betrayed Odie.

and broke the man who believed on open arms.

Maybe polites denies it.

and that's how they get to the sun god's isalnd

Odie sacrafices 6 of his men to get though.

but now insted of just Euricaes being mortified, Polities is to.

maybe polites stays quiet while urilaces and odie fight

and then when it lookes like odie is about too kill him

Odie is now torn between the duty of his friendship and getting back to his wife. Maybe we can build up a sort of rivaly between Polities and Eurilacus, that at this point, They start agreeing that this odie guy is kinda falling off the deep end.

next they go to the underworld, Odie sees the prophecy and desides to embrace becoming the monster.

When they enconter the Sirans and Cut off all of thair tails, Polities is mortified. Insted of the crew just being "Well i guess he's the boss" now there is conflict.

As it is, we don't seee much of the frendship between Odie and Polities, WITCH STINKS!!

Have you heard the cut song "let me be your light?"

They were suposted to be best frends, but that never get's realy explored in the actual musical.

Polities is on the island with Eurilacas and Odie. Eurilas starts to convence Odie that we shoudl just run, but insted of Odie arguing back Polities Jumps in and insists to go back for them. Odie and Polities are frends so he finaly sides with them, frustrateing Eurylochus

Remember back to puppeteer? Odie's crew got turned to pigs and what what Eukalipdis say? "Let's cut our losses."

I'm not saying Cut Eurilucas, but image for a second if Polities was in these situations....

There isn't realy a character that fulfills that roll in EPIC as it is. The closest thing we have is Eurylochus who is so taken aback by Odies disregard for his own crew's life that he dose a hostile takeover of the ship and manages to get evryone killed by Zuse. And while that's cute...

But for a second i want to image a world where Polities survived and was forced to go with Odisus thought the rest of his journy. Imagen an alternet timeline where he got to watch his friend slowly turn into a monster while holding onto his open arms philosophy,

So what happens in epic?

Polities gets pancaked in the second saga of the musical.

No fanfair, no nothing.

He gets a single song, a couple lines and then he is dead with only his voice to eco though Odisuses thoughts as he worked though his own emotional baggage,

But in order to tell a compelling story with a solid moral you have to explore the antitheses. In epic if the moral is Ruthlessness, then Polities and his song "Open arms." is just that. This makes Polities literally the most important character because to prove the message you must show he is wrong

Now weather or not i agree with this moral is besides the point, but across the musical we see Odie ressle with "When dose a man become a monster" and seeing his kind actions lead to more pain forcing him to harden his heart.

the core "Moral" of Epic is this: Sometime it is necessary to do unethical or hanus acts for the betterment of oneself and the people you love. or to put it in the words of Pociden "Ruthlessness is mercy upon yourself."

I think Polities is one of the most fascinating characters in the whole narrative for one simple reason. But to understand that, you must first understand what epic is as a piece of media and what it's trying to say.

This is unironicly one of my favoret tropes, but for the longes time, it was very female coded. The blond haired b*tches i called them, Cloe, Pasifica, Sasha ext. I used to only have Winter to prove the trope was gender nutral, but more keep showing up and i am happy!

Between Jax from AMDC and Angle from Hazben we realy have been spoiled with male "Sheep in Wolves Clothing" characters recently.

Mmmmm give me more bully/brats with a heart of gold who uses aggression to protect themselves from vulnerability!

I NEED IT!!
