In the last half decade, our writers have shared stories about surviving extreme heat, navigating broken health care, and being shut out of elections. One of our most read pieces of 2025 is about how kittens softened an entire yard.

I can't stress enough the importance of local/state elections that can impact you instantly.. ballot initiatives, Senate/House Reps, judges, MAYORS, sheriffs, schoolboards, county executives/councils, etc. Do your research, know who/what you're voting for. #LRP

Today is #WorldJellyfishDay! A great day to introduce young readers to Maude Delap, a pioneering scientist from rural Ireland who was the first person to raise them in captivity through their full life cycle. She did this back in 1899! #kidslovenonfiction #STEAM #JellyfishScientist

Palate cleanse. Some humans are terrible, but more of us are great.

This work was my first job as a geologist. We tested the soil around underground oil & gas storage tanks in Connecticut (a state with a LOT of regulations around this thankfully, because they can literally poison people's water). The fact that there was only ONE guy doing this is already horrific.

"I keep gazing out of my window like the daydreamer I am, just to detach from my trapped reality of this cell. To hope. To imagine.

I pretend I crawl out of the window into the loving arms of a community filled with opportunity and purpose."
Opening the Window
I opened the window inside a California Institution for Women (CIW) cell. Suddenly, before I could focus on the sights, I was...

A reminder that less than two months ago, the Trump administration abruptly ended the federal government's 27-year practice of collecting data on hunger and food insecurity.
Had my first sit-down meal at Barney Greengrass today. The meal was perfection. & our waiter has been working there 34 years! (They opened in 1908!)

For three decades, a little-known group of “mitigation specialists” has helped save death-penalty defendants by documenting their childhood traumas.

Take a rare look inside one case:

I brought this up repeatedly at the journalism conference yesterday organized by the New York Press club, including asking @sulliview.bsky.social about it.
I'm seeing a whole lot less outrage for the journalists of color who have been systematically discarded at places like NBC and CBS (and across journalism, really) than the response to Jimmy Kimmel's 5-day suspension.
