Dear Teachers,

Reminder: Other cultures’ / religions' holidays may only be acknowledged during OUR holiday season.

Now that Tishrei is ending, there is to be no more holiday talk until next year's holiday season.

I can't think of anything I did wrong. Maybe he simply felt sad that his spring #chag lasts only one day?

I was SO excited to tell him that the country I come from has a large Christian minority, and I spent a few minutes telling him how much we loooove the Christians in my home country and how nice we have been to them throughout history.

He looked uncomfortable and got quiet.

I work at a reception desk and today asked one of our clients what he did for #Shavuot this year. He replied that he's a Christian and so he doesn't celebrate Shavuot.

Right, like Christian Purim or Christian Rosh Hashanah.
It’s SO important to recognize other people among us here in the #USA, especially when so few have ever actually met any #Christians, or know what #Christianity #practices and/or #believes, or can even name a single #Christian #holiday.

I’m very disappointed that Christian-American #HeritageMonth #XAHM was canceled this year!

I'm at least as confused about Yom Saint Patrick Ha'Kadosh as the grocery store has been selling chocolate gelt. Maybe it's actually Christian Chanukkah?
I’m a little confused.

At first I thought Mardi Gras was the Christian Purim.

Then I thought Yom Saint Patrick Ha’Kadosh was the Christian Purim.

So which #holiday is ACTUALLY the Christian Purim?

Really fascinating. Had a student who brought in chocolate hearts today. They must have confused tu b'shvat and tu b'av!
“How do you address children who don’t celebrate Tu Bishvat, Purim, or Pesach?"

Rings true.
I hear there is a Christian observance on their Pesach Sheni (14th day of the 2nd month) called Yom Valentime, perhaps for those who missed the marking of their Pope Gregory New Year one month prior?
For those who are unfamiliar, “Christmas” is one of the Christian high holidays (the one with the tree), and though it seems to move around on the calendar, it is actually pinned to a specific day on the Pope Gregory Calendar!

I think it’s sometime this week.
Still true.

(Still trying to catch up, as you can see.)

My daughter's teacher had this solution: give non-celebrating kids a gragger and their own table in the corner. (A warning against excessive noise was also given.)
There are ways to work around something like that and with communication you can work something out, and it’s not a huge issue.

I try to get all of the kids in my class a mishloach manot basket.

And one year I had a little girl who didn’t celebrate Purim, so I reached out and I asked her mom, can I give her an end-of-quarter present, which she was 1000% fine with.

If I had more than a few who were not ok with #celebrating #TuBishvat, we don’t do Tu Bishvat activities, we do nature activities.

I have had some who have had some #religious #beliefs about celebrating Tu Bishvat and I am 100% respectful of that.

She said, 'Don’t worry about it! I’m just not going to send her to school on that day so that you don’t have to worry about changing things for the rest of the class.'

8/12
I reached out to that mom, and I let her know that typically we did a #Purim #party but that I would be more than happy to change things up.

However, in the past, of course I had several who didn’t. For example, last year I had a little girl who, her parents' survey came back with, they don’t really celebrate all of the major holidays.

This year, I got a whole class of celebrators!

Thankfully, I have the all-clear to do all of the holiday activities.

The way that I do it is that every year at the beginning of the year I send home a parent survey.

It helps me get to know the kids a little bit better, their family a little bit better. On this page, there’s a section that says 'are there any holidays your family does not celebrate?'

It is extremely important to be mindful and respectful of everyone’s wishes as far as #celebrating #holidays or not celebrating holidays.
