It’s October, which is an excuse to spend the month posting the scariest, strangest, and most disconcerting images from the history of art. I’ve accumulated quite a collection, so apologies in advance for all the spooky content I won't be able to resist sharing. 🎃
Trophime Bigot, The Screaming Man, 1625, oil on canvas. Canvas, 79 x 100 cm Kunsthistoriches Museum, Vienna. A man in 17th-century costume and holding a paper lantern screams, surprised by a carved jack-o'-lantern behind him. Another man concealed behind him smiles

Francisco de Goya y Lucientes, Witches' Flight, 1798, Oil on canvas, 43.5 cm x 30.5 cm (Museo del Prado)
"Three bare-chested characters wearing dunce caps hold a fourth, nude character in the air while another lies on the floor, covering his ears, A sixth figure flees, his head covered with a white cloth. With his hand, he makes the gesture intended to protect him from the evil eye. At the right of the scene, a donkey stands out against the neutral background. This was one of six canvases Goya sold to the Duke and Duchess of Osuna in 1798, as decoration for their country house in La Alameda. They are linked to the etchings from his Caprichos series, in which he presented scenes of witches and witchcraft similar to this one. This painting was acquired by the Prado Museum in 1999 with funds from the Villaescusa legacy." -Museo del Prado https://www.museodelprado.es/en/the-collection/art-work/witches-flight/5e44d19d-7cda-472b-b6d8-8868c599d252?searchid=4d991d95-a21f-8ffa-9b5c-64591eee7afd

Pedro de Camprobín, Death and the Gentleman, c. 1670 (Hospital de la Caridad, Seville). In this unique painting, Death seems to be in the guise of a prostitute, who were often veiled in 17th-century Seville 🎃💀 #earlymodern
The painting depicts a 17th-century Spanish gentleman visited by Death, who seems to be in the guise of a woman who unveiled herself to him. On the table are objects associated with with the vices of the caballero: music, money, games of chance, duels, etc

It's always a good time to reach out to the one you love and remind them that you'll both be eaten by worms. 💀❤️

"A Letter to Me and You" (Memento Mori), German, ca. 1860, 8 7/16 × 6 3/8 in. (21.5 × 16.2 cm) (Metropolitan Museum of Art) 🎃
"The concept of 'Memento mori' reflects on the insignificance of earthly life in comparison to the enduring experience of the afterlife. This nineteenth-century moralizing double-sided folded letter is addressed to 'me and you'. It is printed on both sides and reveals various different images and written messages as it is unfolded. On the outside, other than the address to the recipient, a religious illustration is printed. The image begins as Adam depicted alone in Paradise, and then unfolds to show Adam and Eve on either side of the Tree of Wisdom, committing their sin by eating the apple. The image culminates in in the figure of the crucified Christ, and visualizes the sacrifice made to redeem this primordial sin. The other side of the letter addresses worldly sins, and reminds not to care too much for earthly riches. The image begins as a depiction of a well-dressed man and woman in a landscape. By unfolding the letter, the depiction of their lower halves changes to show their skeletons, and below their feet is an image of a corpse being eaten by worms." On his election in 1655, Pope Alexander VII commissioned Gian Lorenzo Bernini to sculpt a skull in marble, which he kept on his desk as a reminder of death's omnipresence. The sculpture was rediscovered in 2021 at Schloss Pillnitz, Dresden
