It is more than a little awkward to realize that I had two books come out this year, a fact due more to different schedules and timelines of publishing than some prodigious productivity. The Double Shift from Verso...

The Double Shift
Even as the rewards of work decline and its demands on us increase, many people double-down on their commitment to wage slavery—working harder, doing overtime, and learning to hustle. To paraphrase Sp...

no kings = no paychecks = the slogan of reactionaries at all times (cf trickle down economics, adam smith etc)

Bessent: "This crazy No Kings rally this weekend, which is gonna be the farthest left, the hardest core, the most unhinged in the Democratic Party, which is a big title. No Kings equals no paychecks."

Michel Foucault was born on this day all of his investigations into the relations of power and knowledge would have never prepared him for our new episteme of powerful people getting away with saying stupid stuff.

There is a division online between those who find it laughable that the administration is invading Portland, OR, a city that is very much not in flames, and going after Antifa, which is not an organization at all, and those that find it terrifying.

Very jarring how the media treats some lives as inherently and others not.

I am happy for hostages and their families to be reunited, but it’s shocking how little media attention is given to “how do Gazans grapple with the utter destruction of their homes, vast loss of lives, and ongoing famine.”

yearly reminder to people insisting that we view Christopher Columbus as "a man of his time" that *the people responsible for the Spanish Inquisition* thought Columbus was out of pocket

Christopher Columbus was dragged back to Spain in chains by a crusading knight, convicted of tyranny and immeasurable cruelty, pardoned by Isabella but banned from returning to Hispaniola.

Fuck Columbus.

Auspicious start for the new CBS News, laundering unattributed cop shit-talking through the incoming editor-in-chief’s blog and failing to correct a misspelling of the story subject’s name in the web headline for three days.

Christopher Columbus: A racist religious zealot confused about geography and obsessed with gold. He didn't discover America, he is America.

the actual story here, which the media never talks about, is that police in this country have become a discrete right-wing political operation. the story isn't about cops leaving (they're lying about that), it's about the police trying to exert influence over elections.

Lmao is this supposed to be a bad thing?
A tweet from Bari Weiss that says “"It's shaken me to my core," a lieutenant said of Mamdani's unexpected victory in June. "The absolute dread I feel is palpable.

Today in @TheFP our @Olivia_Reingold talks to the cops who say they will walk if Zohran Mamdani is elected in November:”

Apparently Raoul Peck has a new documentary on Orwell's relevance for our times. I haven't seen it yet, but here is what I wrote on thinking about 1984 in 2025.

Attacks on the federal workforce are also attacks on Black workers, who are overrepresented in the public sector.

Black unemployment is 7.5%. I'm reminded of Coates' observation that Black Americans regularly experience conditions that would be considered a crisis if whites faced them.
Black Unemployment Is Surging Again. This Time Is Different.

a key thing about vought — and all of these guys — is that they have a totally top down and hierarchical vision of the world. they believe that the cultural changes they hate can be turned off by destroying the federal government because they can’t imagine that they emerged bottom-up in society

What he’s railing against is a profound shift in culture, status… He’s obsessed with the idea that America is controlled by a leftist “ruling elite” - but “elite” isn’t defined socio-economically or by political power, it means something like: Getting to define “real America” and who gets to belong.

Yes, "the left" have no power in this country, but somehow everything the right does is somehow their fault. This from the people who believe in personal responsibility.

Yesterday I was told that the class I’m scheduled to teach this month, Confronting Oppression & Injustice, is no longer part of our curriculum. This is a required class yet there was no discussion, no faculty vote, just an email saying the class no longer exists. This is what it’s like in Texas now.

I had never read Chuck Tingle, so I put this on my Halloween month reading list. I thought it was an interesting attempt to construct a kind of cosmic horror from the statistical uncertainty of existence. Plus casino owners are the right villains for our age.
