I'm always up for covering the latest buzzy building that goes up in New York. But it was a blast to write about the city's older, masonry, so-called Class B buildings—and the tenants that are attracted to them—for the New York Times. Here's a gift link:

I'd been looking forward to going to a game but then I saw the prices. Instead we're gonna watch the games in a good old NYC bar and give the local business our money

Until recently, most Americans would have seen a video like this and assumed it took place in another country.
One day after the Supreme Court lifted the ban on racial profiling, federal agents swarmed a car in Van Nuys.

Four masked agents with guns drawn yanked people out, slammed them to the ground, and pointed a weapon at a pregnant woman.

There is no justification for this. None.
He says as much! And he says that a lot of people deserve credit for enlarging and improving upon his idea. I can't name everyone in such a short piece for a national audience—that's why it's great that other reporters have done focused stories such as the ones you link to. Room for both approaches!
Ryan Gravel wrote in his book how his original transit corridor/redevelopment engine idea expanded to embrace parks and trails, affordable housing and many more worthy goals as it acquired grassroots support and responded to community concerns raised in public meetings.

Breaking Herr Silence:

"Bob Clark, VP of marketing for Herr Foods, Inc., said the company was surprised to see its chips mentioned in the press.

'While we can’t speak to the details of the story, we can confirm that our Sour Cream & Onion flavor is money.'” www.thecity.nyc/2025/08/21/w...
The Chips Fall as Rivals Fry the Mayor
The jokes and jabs are flying as Eric Adams’ closest aides was slapped with new criminal charges the day after another of his longtime allies offered a reporter cash inside a potato chip bag.

I love the Beltline, but this article makes some great points about how it's pushed out Black residents. So much of it is tied back to Atlanta's woeful transportation choices going back decades.
When a new section of the Atlanta Beltline opened recently, it was reason to celebrate: The path encircling the Georgia capital now extends 13 miles. But some in Black neighborhoods fear the gentrification and displacement associated with the Beltline. My latest 👇

This week, mayoral candidates Andrew Cuomo and Eric Adams revealed some new (but strangely familiar) campaign branding. So we asked three design experts to review the logos of our five mayoral candidates.

"They're all terrible, except for Zohran," one told Hell Gate.

The helicopter crash that killed six people last week could have been worse had the aircraft landed on either side of the Hudson — and because of that, Jersey City Mayor Steve Fulop says limiting tourist flights is a no-brainer.

New York City Mayor Eric Adams disagrees.
Mayor Adams still backs helicopter tourism. Jersey City Mayor Fulop says it has to go.
In the wake of a crash that killed 6, Fulop says it’s ‘just a matter of time before somebody else gets hurt.

Given the pandemic hobby boom, you might think a new store selling crafts supplies would be warmly welcomed. But the arrival of Hobby Lobby in Tribeca has raised hackles because of the right-wing politics of the company founders. Gift link to my NYT story below.

The space was such a wreck it was no longer even classified as a residence. But it was in an Italian palazzo and had traces of past grandeur. So two architects bought the space and embarked on a renovation that included finding a hidden staircase. My latest 👇

I went down a rabbit hole inspired by @lissaharris.bsky.social and wound up with (surprise surprise) a map showing how clean Upstate NY's electrical grid is compared to the rest of the US.
Labels show lbs. of CO2 emitted/mWh.

Yes! There's also David Hammons's artwork Day's End, which traces the outline of a bygone pier structure on the Hudson River, off Manhattan
