Hey all, I voted absentee at City Hall today. Super easy. Walked in, got seen in two minutes. Did my paper ballot, submitted it in the special envelopes. Done.

Vote for @dalarrykrasner.bsky.social and vote YES to retain all judges. #Philly #GoBirds #FuckICE #FreePalestine

This reminds me of São Paolo, for good and for ill.

Oh, if we could only have a city with Philly sized streets and this type of train infrastructure!

This is some of the best political news I've seen in a very long time.

There's a clear a way to end the Citizens United precedent by changing state incorporation laws - and now luminaries in both parties are forcing a vote on it in the 2026 election.

Actually, since we’re trashing Indian novelists, The God of Small Things is probably in my top ten novels of all time, and I did not like The Ministry of Utmost Happiness very much. It was… okay… But not up to Arundhati Roy’s first novel.

Jhumpa Lahiri’s The Lowland is one of my favorite books, and her even more acclaimed The Namesake is trash. Terrible book.

Tell me your most unhinged literary opinion, as a little treat

I love this photo, from 1950s Northeast Philly. I grew up on the opposite side of the city but in a similar type of development.
Parents (mostly mothers) blocking an intersection in NE Philly, one of the most car oriented areas of Philadelphia, since much of it was developed post-WWII. During this time NE Philly would have been almost exclusively white, and among the most conservative areas of the city.

For some reason the Youtube algorithm thinks I want ads for “buy Israeli“ and I think they need to improve their metrics. Even the synagogue I belong to makes a concerted effort to boycott Israel.

I have synesthesia with numbers/colors, and I kind of like the color sensation I get from people’s phone numbers too. I know, it’s weird.

Socrates said this writing business might hurt the memory of the Greek people!
jamespkennedy.bsky.social
If a number is important enough, I might write myself an email with it, that way if I break or lose a cell phone we’re not forever separated. But actually doing things this way has a nice pruning effect too, because if we never discuss anything eventually you just disappear.

It’s nice to feel proud of a politician, isn’t it?

Quero melhorar meu portugues, e seja dificil. Leo bem. Não ouço bem.

It still very much depends on my success in finding English teaching work here, but the cost of living is low, so I’m kind of just living on savings for now.

Probably not for a whole year. So maybe next October.

I think I was a late enough adopter of cell phone use that when I did adopt it, I felt like it might diminish my mental capacity not to at least try to memorize numbers. At the very least I probably know your area code and exchange.
jamespkennedy.bsky.social
I still memorize a lot of cell phone numbers, because I’m weird. I have like three people saved to my phone, and the rest are sorted by text conversations. I either memorize your number or I search you by keywords of things we discussed.

If anyone needs me I will be in the museum, lying down next to the bog bodies.
Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?
2? Questions
I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

Ooh, Nor’easter? I’m missing all the fun!

I really think the opposite is true. As an American, I would feel more supported if Canadians put pressure on PM Carney to cut ties a lot deeper. Boycotting liquor is not really up to the necessary scale of events.

A lot of the first highway removals happened by accident. Highways fell due to maintenance being shortchanged or because of earthquakes. And this really points to how change can be sudden and unmitigatedly positive if we will things that direction.
jamespkennedy.bsky.social
The really beautiful and hopeful thing to me about advocacy for highway removal is how much it is based in the idea that most of the city is fine. Like even now, you have these rip-roaring roads, and it’s very unpleasant there, but walk a few blocks and it improves.
